    Weekly Steam Update

It's that time of the week again; Steam will be updating this evening. This time around, Counter-Strike is getting the previously discussed money system changes. There are also numerous bug fixes and optimizations that should make Steam consume less system resources. As usual, you must restart Steam to automatically download the update. You can read the change log in its entirety at the Steam news page or by clicking below. If you are having problems with Steam or would just like to blow off some steam, try out our forums.

UPDATE: The Steam update is being pushed back until tomorrow morning.[break="click here for change log"]
A Counter-Strike update and a game engine update were originally scheduled for tonight, but have been postponed until tomorrow morning. Here's a list of the changes included in the update.

    COUNTER-STRIKE:
    • fixed bug where shield would be invisible if a player picked the shield up immediately after throwing a grenade.

    • the round timer is now disabled when the bomb is planted.

    • the winning defensive team now gets the same amount of money whether they win by round timeout or not ($3250 instead of $2000)

    • players on the offensive team who survive the round due to a round timeout no longer receive money the next round.

    • the terrorists get an additional $800 per player if they plant the bomb but lose the round.

    • fixed exploit where when a player died they could join the other team.
    ENGINE:
    • fixed custom decals not being downloaded from the server correctly.

    • fixed custom decals drawing incorrectly for the host of a listen server after another player joins.

    • fixed vgui textures being corrupted after going over a number of level changes.

    • fixed problem where player would be sometimes be forced to look straight up after task switching in and out of game in fullscreen d3d mode.

    • fixed problem in sound system where it wouldn't properly be shutdown at the end of a .wav file.

    • fixed banner picture not working correctly in hltv.
    VGUI:
    • changed the way that asian fonts are displayed in game for compatibility on more platforms.

    • optimized vgui to use less system resources when running on the desktop.
    GAMEUI:
    • fixed error message that was cut off when a player was disconnected from a game server.

Wow, I've get to get a new videocard quick, because these Direct3d issues are taking longer than I expected to be resolved. Here's hoping you're close to fixing them VALVe!

Looks like the 3 major errors I've had to reinstall for are now fixed. Excellent. It's been a painful slog, but I'm getting happier and happier with Steam. Now to get the wifey to let me buy a decent system...

Gee, why not just switch to Opengl? It's fast, reliable, and the eyecandies are sweeter than lollipops!

Boomstick: Is opengl really too difficult? or 1.5 for that matter.

This is a Steam update, not a Half-life engine update.

None of the fixes above really apply to me, as I don't have any of them, but updates are nice and its good to see any problems being solved.

Heres my problem. With openGL my I get around 40 fps at 640 x 480 and even worse at resolutions higher than that. If I shoot my gun or use my flashlight it drops to around 25 -30 fps. Not very playable for me. In D3d I get around 70-99 fps at 640 x 480. Looks better too except for smoke nades for which look like frigging popcorn kernels (which I'm none too happy about). Right now I'm sticking to 1.5, but I'm worried that the D3d problems some people like me are having aren't going to be resolved by the time WON goes down (however unlikely that might be) or just aren't going to be fixed considering only people with crappy computer/videocards are having this problem and lets face it; I'm in the minority. Not complaining just saying its unfortunate.

Funny how I run constant 99/100 fps which Opengl, graphics are sharper too. I just hate D3D. This goes with all games, like UT2k3

I think they fixed the map load problem, today i was able to stay in a server afer it changed the map. I hope this next update won't have another problem following along with it.
