Well I think CAL set a precedent last season when they didn't cause the CAL-i finals to be replayed despite zEx being packeted

This is a very good post naem, awesome coverage man.

It is unfortunate that the teams got packeted as this might cost the fans their HLTV opportunity. I think that CAL should sacrifice HLTV coverage, and just tell the teams to play their matches some time between today and Monday. that way the schedule won't be set off, it will be extremely difficult for the packeter to time his attack and the matches will be played fairly.

Rival's dispute will most likely be rejected just because they let the GX vs. zEx match stand. In the other match, GX also refused to start over with a pistol round, but demanded to start off with $4000 which is a huge advantage for the terrorists (which GX were). If a match that was so unfair was not replayed, it is unlikely that these matches were overturned.

Are people so obsessed with e-sports to go to the point of packeting opposing teams so they're favorite team can win?

So if it's 3D winning CAL-i this season, what does the person responsible for the packet get? The feeling of satisfaction?

Is there a financial incentive for winning, or for placing high in the tournament? Or does betting upon the results of 'professional e-sports' take place?

I could easily imagine people trying to deliberately affect the outcome of games in order to gain financially...

I bet on some obscure Fanboy channels on irc some geeks are saying 'we rox0rs! teh win!!!!!1' because of this packeting malarkey.

              They clearly NEED A LIFE.

Like someone said, for the playoffs just do away with HLTV and everything. Let the matches be played in secret then just put demos up later. Who cares if the topics at Gotfrag will be flooded with "Where is teh HLTV???" because it's clearly not worth having. It's better that these teams can play some clean, fun, competitive games than our enjoyment of watching it live.

I usualy dont follow CAL at all, I cant stand the high level of competition. But I have nothen against the people who take place in it.

But reading this post I just had to reply to it.

First of fI think its excellent coverage on CSN's part.

Secondly, I agree that the matchs should be played in secret.

And I think it is possible if the teams were able to trace the IP of the attacker...even if it is not static, the IP will stay for at least a week. So it is possible to trace it. If traced, packeting is technicly a computer crime. It is considered hacking, because you are infriltrating someone elses computer against their will. It is also a crime against the ISP, because that creates problems for them as well.

If traceable I would take immeadiate action.

Instead of trying to get the people doing it, or keeping your ip secret, a simple firewall will stop packeting. The way paketing works is by sending a comper a large number of big PING packets. If you get enough people to massively ping a computer, the computer will experience a D.O.S. (denial of service) which floods your entire connection. When only a few people are attempting to do this, you just lag and spike.

I stopped this by selecting the option in my router options that says 'Discard PING from WAN side' which basically just drop the ping request from a hacker, keeping your connection running smoothly. There are other firewalls that run on software, but router's seem to be the best bet.

The way a DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack works is that someone trojans a bunch of computers - sometimes in excess of 200 - and instructs them to attack one target at the same time. Because the attacker's IP never directly talks with the victim it's almost impossible to trace.
