    CAL-i Season 9 :: Playoff Round 1 Results

    The first round of the CAL-i season nine playoffs is over. SYB and zEx had to play their match in secret under different names because of packeting. Someone must really hate zEx as packeting was one of the things blamed for their humiliating 13-6 loss in the finals to GX last season. After reporting the match as being rescheduled, the teams ended up playing it out anyways.

    The most interesting match had to be e7 vs. EG. The final score was 13-11 in favor of e7. This win stretched e7's winning streak to 10 straight matches, regular season and playoffs. It's sad to see either of these teams be eliminated so early but that's how the seeds got arranged.

    Note: All four of my predictions were correct and I was off by only nine extra rounds that the losing teams won.[break="For all of the results click here"] #5 shock over #12 ICE (13-7)

    Shock's first playoff match in invite was a success. A 13-7 margin of victory is very respectable as well as their 9-3 first half. These teams really are of different calibers, ICE barely squeaked into the playoffs while shock led their division for the whole season until the last day. shock's has to look forward to a match against the slumping u5 squad. That much should be much closer and even more exciting to watch.

    #6 e7 over #11 EG (13-11)

    As expected, this was a very close match. I had predicted this one ending 13-10 in favor of e7 and I was only off by one round. These teams have both been asked to do it on LAN and they showed their strength in LAN tournaments as well as online. While EG can only look forward to next season, e7 has a date with Rival on Thursday on de_train.

    #7 TEC over #10 RDW (13-5)

    This match was a blowout of sorts, for a playoff match anyway. Elude had an 16 frag half on the terrorist side to lead his team to victory. TEC will be taking on 3D in the second round. 3D will be looking for revenge after TEC beat them 15-9 in a makeup match. TEC has proven that they have the potential to beat 3D, now they just have to do it again in the playoffs.

    #9 SYB over #8 zEx (13-10)

    The circumstances of the match are truly strange. There seems to have been more packeting attacks on one of zEx's matches so this had to be played in secret. Even under the strange conditions SYB was able to pull off a win that they deserved all the way back to last season when they missed the playoffs by only a few points. Their win eliminated the possibility of another TSG vs. zEx match in the second round though. SYB is now the lowest ranked team still alive and will have to face the #1 team, TSG. Chances are high that this is where their playoff hopes die, but as we all know, CS is unpredictable so don't count them out yet.

        I wanted to see the zEx vs SYB match too never got to. The e7 vs EG match was pretty good though, but the only reason why e7 won was a lucky defuse. If EG's last guy was watching the bomb EG would have tied it.

              im just wondering - how did you predict 13-10 as a score when there are 24 rounds?

                    It's really easy. Here is the thing, since the playoffs are elimination and not round based, extra rounds don't matter so a 13-11 score is the same as 13-0, the team that gets the 13 rounds moves on. Thus matches are not played out in the playoffs (and most LAN tournaments). Thus, you can have matches go less than the full 24 rounds.
