    Bittles

Hello, my name is DchozN and I am addicted to newsbits. I have lost my family, my home, my car, and my life. Anywho, with that said, time for more newsbits!
    • counter-hack has released a guide on how to use steam over linux. it if interests your inner linux being, go on over and grab this.

    • ventrilo has released the newest version of their ever popular voice communication software that is utilized by professionals in public servers everywhere. if you haven't done so, get the latest version now!

    • mirc 6.12 has been found with another bug. it deals with a minimized dcc window that leads to mirc crashing. if you wish to find out more and a temporary solution, head on over right now.

    • cyber x games wants teams that want to be sponsored (who doesn't?) to appear at the computer electronic trade show in las vegas.
while we cannot guarantee any specific level of support for our participating players we are willing to forward player biographies and team information to those companies requesting information. we would anticipate that sponsor funding would range in support from $500 - $3,000 depending on the type of association established.
if you're bummbed out that you live too far away from vegas, then start crying and read the full post right here!
Remember friends, do not newsbits and drive. Never.

How does Ventrilo work? I didn't see much description as to how the program actually works on their site.

I heard about Ventrilo when I was listening to CyberX on the night of Steam's release...sounds like a useful program, possibly, but if it's going to be too hard to figure out how to work it...

Is there a benefit to using this instead of the normal in-game voice-com?

                        Ventrilo works like this:

Someone hosts a server with the server executable, they have full control over such things as server name, password, admin password, voice quality, etc.

Other people join the server through the client program. You input the server IP, pass (if applicable), and your username, then click Connect. You can choose to either use Voice Activation mode (it automatically broadcasts when your mic pics up a certain level of sound), or Push-To-Talk (define to key that broadcasts mic input when you press it).

Servers can have multiple channels (its up to the server op), so lets say you want to talk to your friend playing CS, but don't want to hear some guy playing music in the main Lobby, just join the CS channel (if there is one).

Me and my clan have a dedicated Ventrilo server, only $10 a month, and its great. We're constantly in there, talking, and it really helps strengthen a community.

BTW, that "new" version of Ventrilo, 2.1.3, has been out for almost a month.

And the whole "Fresh, tasty, delicious, warm batch of addictive Newsbits" thing is getting old. You don't have to have a SUPER HAPPY WOW COOL HOHO AWESOME GREAT FUNNY theme to go with every post.
