Cyber Cafe Registration

VALVe has opened the registration page which will allow Cyber Cafes to run their games via Steam.

Software purchased at retail is not licensed for commercial use such as cyber café play. If you operate a gaming center, our program is the legal way to obtain a commercial license and offer Valve's games to your customers.

This is a pretty important development, so thanks to FLeK0 for submitting it. Remember that if your gaming center doesn't sign up for this then they could be using VALVe games illegally. Crime doesn't pay! Except... when it makes you rich. More information can be found here.

Halo is free to use and so are many others. I have mixed feelings about this but it would be silly to hate Valve for making money off of their own games. It could be the nail in the coffin as this reverberates from the net cafes onto the tournaments destroying the "pro" audience that gives CS the edge over other games.



Ultimately it could be said that cyber cafes are ripping Valve off, it's the same thing as distributing .mp3 across the net so if thats theft then this must be too. If you look at it one way, as in Valve are evil, greedy, fat, capitalists ripping us off and it's all about the money to them, you can look at it another way where cyber cafes are evil, gredding, fat, capitalists ripping valve off and it's all about money to them.

ya its not that much, however you need to take in consideration all the other costs of that lan center, like bandwidth, server, computers, payroll, ect... this is just one more thing that you now need to pay for, which ya does kind of bug me...



Whats next, have to pay valve for having a dedicated server?

nahh having to pay for a game 5 years after you bought it.. wait..

They get faster response time and such, and actually have non-bannable CDKeys, so that people can't just screw things up, whereas nowadays in LAN Centres, people cheat, knowing that they are not the ones being banned.



And VALVe seems very commited in making sure that the LAN operators get value for their money. My opinion is that LAN operators will realise how Steam and the subscription system can benefit them in the long run.

You got to pay $10, per month per computer, and over time that is equivalent to buying HL over and over again. Not to mention the unbanning is on a shop-to-shop basis, and to register you have to prove that you're running a LAN gaming business.

indeed, I'm sure alot of centers will start crying because they will have to start paying for it though, but at the end of the day, they ARE using software bought for a single liscence and charging people to use it, it is like buying a cd and then charging people to listen too it (ie. radio stations have to pay)

im totaly against this because it is one of the only games you have to pay for and lets say a lan center has 20 cpus running valve games thats 200$ a month it is yet another bill

It hasn't mentionned anywhere that it was 10$/comp/month, that pricing was just a rumor.

Also, LAN centers don't make 5$/hour/computer, so don't say things you have no idea of. In a LAN center, I played for 4 hours and payed 5$ Canadian total.

And we all know the ultra-super-great reliable support Valve has been for the community. They keep changing to the worst things that were great (ie. 1.5 to 1.6 + steam...).



So please get informed before making suppositions.

um, in the email I received from valve it said $10 per computer per month. we have 15, that is $1800 a year. Also our lan center's regular price is $5/hr but its not like were busy every day all the time.
