I wonder if steam really was that bad :\

on a side note, out of curiosity, how does this 'stealing' compare to 'stealing' music (hint: its not stealing for music, its copyright infringment.)

Is this still stealing or a lesser, (probably civil) charge? It is true that no one was denied access to the source by this.

Heck, I was at VALVe last week the day after the source code was originally leaked to the public.

I don't know about that, intellectual PROPERTY is still property.
Ah. But is it. I for one have grave doubts as to the validity of the whole "intellectual property" concept. Sure, patents can be beneficial, trademarks are useful, copyrights probably needed - but I have trouble thinking that ideas can be owned in any way.

But this much larger debate is probably best left to other forums... not that I'd have much more to say anyhow.
        Theft, dictionary:

The act or an instance of stealing; larceny.

        Steal:

To take (the property of another) without right or permission.

        Take:

To get into one's possession by force, skill, or artifice

Let's say that hacking is a skill.
Intriguing. I've never seen anybody follow that chain of definitions that far, people usually stop at step 1. Hmmm I'll have to consider that, and of course I must admit that in everyday speech "stealing" can apply to a lot of incidents.

Well I think the direction of capitalism just contradicts that. America is moving toward a service-based economy, for example. That doesn't mean your opinion is wrong, but it just doesn't apply to our culture and law.

Plenty of people enjoyed their lunch and were making jokes. It wasn't the best day but I think most of the company realized that it was regretful but unreversable.

I would think that things are more darker now that content has been released, but it's a business and has a job to do. I can tell you that the employees of Valve don't deserve this BS at all, but you know that already.

Haha, when cliffe first told me about the leak I thought he was accusing me for a second.

btw forgot this: someone mentioned Valve becoming "SCO of the gaming world in about a minute.".. lol!

I do indeed fear that no reasonable reform of IP laws will take place and idiotic situations will ensue. :\ Something needs to change, a move towards immaterial assets is too big to be handled by old laws of a different time..

Yeah I dislike the mindset that even if someone thinks Valve sucks they "deserved" to be hacked. :|

Thanks for relaying your impressions about the atmosphere, not many people have been to Valve after the leak and told about it. (That "interview" by one of the HL sites was teh stupid)

I can't imagine how I'd feel if this sort of thing happened to me and I worked for them. I wonder if Valve knows that it's fans feel for them even though we don't exactly know what this means to Valve(or at least I don't). That's aside from all the jerks that think Valve deserves what happened.

Whats wrong with that? you say that as if it's a bad thing, it's not. Ive seen it done for so many games, it helps promote some mods based on the engine. AvP2 is one that comes to mind.
Sorry that I didn't respond to this earlier.

I was being sarcastic when I said that a lot of software is developed in an open source environment. AvP2 was not developed in an open source environment I'm fairly certain. No games are, it's just how the industry works.

Well I dunno, considering the amount of work valve has gotten done in the last few years...

                      It's quite possible...and knowing Gabe Newell's ways...yea..it's almost certain.

All this drama distracts from the one overlying truth.

Half-Life 2 and everything based on its engine are going to be so exciting and visually appealing that when all the dust clears the game will speak for itself.

I will buy Half-Life 2, I will buy Condition Zero.

I could just as easily steal it, but I won't. I respect the people who spent so much time on these games. I want to have a career in programming so for simple empathy I cannot steal from these guys with a clear head.

Half-Life 2 will be just as revolutionary as HL1, if not greater.

HL2 might not even BE. Because of certain agreements alotta of their partners code has been released which opens them for lawsuits.

As well as the fact that this so called "unscripted engine" wasn't even anywhere near completion.

It might have been a sham the whole time.

                          Bummer.

i honestly doubt he will ever get caught, there is a thing such as too much evidence, as, a lot of people have been said to have done this but no one knows for sure i've seen 5 interviews for supposively "the lead hacker" has answered questions.. i also don't see why people are saying "myg0t doesn't have enough talent to do it" when anyone is capable of doing this with knowledge of the different forms of hacking.

But myg0t is a buncha fuxx0rs they make hacks for in-game not hack the games before they even fucking come out...

They don't got the balls to pull a stunt like this.
