The idea behind rewriting, Xero2kx, is to alter parts that a hacker could otherwise exploit. Such examples would include the netcode, the key generation, and who knows what else (probably stuff in the graphics area as well, to prevent visual hacks from being so easy to make). If a hacker has working source code, hacks are waaay easier to write, and can be much more powerful. That's why you have to change so much of it.

Valve told the community (at least the admin comm.) they would be able to play CS 1.x on the HL2 engine a while back... but no one listens apparently.

It sucks, but after seeing the delay to Holidays and then to 2004 my HL2 hype mood has been mightily squelched and I am kinda digging this dude releasing this stuff. Maybe I consider it justice for not getting it out a week ago. I'm sure when this guy gets caught he's gonna be ripped a new one, but it is entertaining.

So how is this guy releasing all of this stuff? Is there no way to trace it back to a specific IP or anything? I really don't know how that'd all work so what I said probably doesn't make sense. Anyhow, this guy is doing it for attention. He doesn't care if no one knows what his name is or who he is as a person. Everytime he sees stuff in the news or on message boards, fansites, etc. he knows full well who everyone is talking about. All of the hate and discussion is being directed at him and my guess is it gives him a warm and fuzzy feeling inside to be known this widely. So, we don't know his name, no big deal to him because he's still getting a whole lot of attention from everyone.

Wanted to add that I'm sure attention wasn't his only motive but I'm sure it was one of them.

the screenshots of half-life running on the hl2 engine dont look much different except for the hud...



it will also cut the download size of hl2 if we have half the engine installed with steam already.
