I played CS BETA 6.5 a few days ago with a few mates of mine online. MY GOD was it crap, back then everyone *might* have been "this is fuking ace", but looking back on it now... jeez. We played about half an hour on de_Aztec, I was like "D: wtf is this!?" At least it got improved..

Indeed. There's a joy in remembering the "good old days" and all that, but mostly I'd prefer to remember it in that positive light rather than try to relive it. Wolfenstein was awesome at the time, but I don't find it nearly so entertaining anymore -- progress is a good thing.

Ah yes, the endless netcode argument... Have fun, I'm not even going to get involved this time, but it's probably obvious what perspective I have on the matter. *Glances left at avatar*

          wait. back to tv.

          and cs.

you see i had this idea back in the day of aq2, during a nice little dead period. we should put aq2 on tv. so we can watch a bunch of 'charismatic', dry (brain?)dead people talking.

then someone stole my idea, called it big brother

and cus i put awkward line breaks in, i can call this poetry. and cus this site is based in america, that probably means if you quote it i can sue you for theft. yay america. wait i cant say that i'll get sued for discrimination. wait i cant say that either. ill get sued for negligence cus i didnt state what groups. wait i cant say that cus i said groups and thats sexual

that reminds me, on kilroy this morning there was this issue about "i want my partner to change the way they look".

women were supported when men criticised them

After trying it, here's a few things that I noticed.

1.) No Knife Running, that was one of the things I was really looking forward to when I tried this out. Knife running was where when you took out your knife you could sprint very very fast. It was one of the most fun features of Beta 5.

2.) Crosshairs are the same as now. I was hoping for the old crappy crosshair that you can replace with other sprites. The way it was from Beta 1 - 5.2.

3.) AWP damage is restored back to one shot one kill wherever you hit the target.

4.) Snipers once again have regular crosshairs when not zoomed in.

                5.) Speeds are much faster

6.) Dust is a very old version. The box near the CT side of the bomb site in the middle area is not there. The Boxes near the cliff facing the underpass aren't there either. It looks like Dust beta 4.

7.) My favorite part is that a lot of older maps make a return in this mod for CS. Maps like weapon depot, docks, etc. It has the maps from Beta 1 - Beta 6.2. Everything afterwards is not there. IMO, those were the best CS maps made. Although a few are missing like Oilrig, Cbble and my favorite Prodigy. I don't see why prodigy isn't there, it was a Beta 4 map. I haven't seen what version of Siege they have in this.

8.) No scoped M4. When the CS team took the scope off M4 it caused a lot of controversy. I was hoping to see that in this, but it wasn't. I guess because the AUG is in it as well.

9.) The models look quite bad. They seem like they are even worse than Beta 5 models. At least when I looked at them. Then again maybe I just haven't played Beta 5 in a long time. On the bright side, though, they do have all of Gooseman's animations.

10.) Some weapons aren't in this mod it seems. The Elites. FiveseveN, UMP, and SG-550 aren't in the mod.

11.) You can move the hostages on T again :).

12.) No VGUI, I never used it from the beginning, but for those who do use it, you'll have to use the old weapons menu.

                13.) No jumping pause

14.) No Dynamic Crosshair (gets smaller when you crouch, bigger when you move, etc)

15.) No knife stab. They took away the Stab so it's like it used to be, just slash.

I haven't played in a full server yet, so I can't quite tell you how it is to play...

If you want the newer weapons models just copy all of the files except the p_ files into the retrocs\models directory and you will at least have those.

Oh and about Beta 6.5. We all know it sucked. Everyone hated Beta 6.5 when it came out. If you want to play an old version of CS try Beta 5.2 or if you want Beta 6.2, but I recommend Beta 5.2. The only thing is the netcode isn't close to as mercyful to high pingers. Unfortunately the CS B5.2 community is basically dead. Not much happening there anymore. When it first started there were quite a few people playing, but not anymore. Also, since they refuse to try to make CS B5.2 exactly how it was on the new netcode, it will probably never gain popularity since people don't feel like downgrading, taking another 500 megs on their HDD and then installing Beta 5.2 just to play...

The only way they can make one of these classic CS games work is to make it CS Beta 5.2 with the new models on the newest version of HL, then maybe they would get some people to play.

but i still felt justified in making a comment.

IRAQ CAN ATTACK IN 45 MINUTES. *cough*

Anyway, quick review of the mod: crap. it takes a bunch of features out and remarkets the product. so why does that make it better? moving hostages on T is perhaps the only benefit that isnt a complete whoring opportunity. see i pwn with scout with no crosshairs, scout w crosshairs would just be fun.

250ping still exhibits mystery teleporting. (maybe i frequent bad servers)

netcode is satan: it gets everything done[power], makes the world go round[money], and people bitch at it all the time. (loose i know)

teleporting is the devil when i play on ISDN, but it's my best friend on 56k! Try playing CS when your ping runs 400-800 on a good day, and then tell me that teleporting doesn't help.

I have a dsl connection (no fastpath) and usually have avg. pings of ~100ms. But then there are days, when the other 9 ppl, with who I share the connection via a hardware router, decide to download the whole content of kazaa and several other file sharing systems at once, without bothering about bandwith limitations (this is when I usually go down into the basement to pull a few cables out of the switch . However, my ping then either increases way beyond 5 seconds, or I can keep playing with ~200-350ms. In the latter case, I experienced beeing able to survive a dumb-rush into the enemy team with mp5 & kevlar. I could tell by the way they were trying to aim at me that I, from their point of view, was unpredictably 'teleporting' around. All I had to do was empty my mag into them.

What I'm trying to say is not that HL's netcode sucks (it's pretty sophisticated in my eyes), but that HPBs can bring doom to experienced (low-ping) players who are trained / used to kill their enemies by short, well-aimed bursts instead of spray'n'pray, because they just don't know where to aim and they don't realize in the heat of battle that it would be a good occasion to spray.

I beg your excuse for beeing completely off-topic.

It's a shame I came in at CS 1.4, because I would really like to know how CS was before... What sounds really cool is Ts being able to move hosties.

I don't know anymore when exactly I started playing CS. It must have been somewhen between summer '99 and summer 2000. I remember bunny hopping, Ts moving hossies and inevitably lethal awp hits, but I can't remember M4s with scopes. I just know I played some very early version (some kind of d-day map?) somewhen and didn't like it at all (I played aq2 back then and was really pissed off by ppl shooting me through walls lol)

edit: according to CS's version history, it must have been around BETA5.

You could totally be a whore with the hosties pre-1.4. Back when hostie jumping and hiding the hosties in 4 really far away places was a bastard of a strat. CT's wouldn't know where to look, timers would run out while they searched the whole map. As a t you could use the hosties to get up on top of the large crates in cs_assault and then also to block the back door with them. It was awesome.

That was also before the hoes started showing up on the CT radar, so they could have been anywhere. It was fun watching them search everywhere.
