Yea i would be more inclined to use default in game if the quality was higher and it didn't lower your game volume every time someone said something. Makes it very distracting and the #1 reason my clan uses ventrilo.

on a listen server with loop back the settings 1-5 all sound the same to me. Probably just a problem with loopback and listen servers. It said the varaible was changing in console so i know that's not the problem.
and snake believe it or not that's kind of a bad reason which we (my clan) have come to learn. IF you reply too much on getting information about the enemy through your dead team mates, you start to lose some of the intuition and strategical thinking you had when you couldn't communicate with dead members and it can actually worsen your game. Just because your team mate got killed at long A by 2 guys doesn't mean those 2 guys are still there, and when you rely on that fact in a way you wouldn't rely on it otherwise, you can get caught off guard. I would glady go back to in game if it offered the quality of ventrilo without the in game sound reduction every time someone talked.Comment

I don't think Valve would freely allow their players to ghost. Alltalk is a different story, it's more of a comedy "everyone chat" type thing and you can't really ghost since the other team can hear you and ghost as well. But team only chat between players dead and alive is pushing it too far. Dead players were never meant to be able to chat with live players. The only reason third party voice programs are allowed in CAL is because:
A. they have no way to enforce it so might as well make it legal for everyone.
B. it ensures LAN teams who are free to ghost in unmonitored lan centers don't have such a large advantage over online teams.
CAL has spoken out about ventrilo and similar programs numerous times in the amateur league, and they refer to the whole situation as just that amateur. Ghosting isn't allowed at the CPL.
They try their best to keep a balanced and fair game at the amateur level but it's just not really possible, and as such the legalization of these third party voice programs is kind of a mixed blessing/hack job to the problem.Comment

True, but at least if your team knew that there were two guys just at long a they could send someone who was perhaps guarding mid, therefore keeping them either pinned in one place or forcing them to rush long. I understand you can't rely on the extra information completely, but at least it gives an idea of what might be going on.
Another example: say there is one guy watching long a, another guy at b, and they both die. The guy at long a could say "4 of them coming to a with bomb"; otherwise the team would be split and not know which the real target was.
Just because the extra information they can give could become outdated doesn't remove the usefulness of, in fact, receiving extra information.Comment

try the command voice_overdrive 1, that should make voice comm sound same volume as sounds effects.

It'd be really damn nice if they kept up with the exploits/hacks on CS1.6 BETA. Not only was this one guy using a shield exploit (Didn't have it completely in front of him but it acted as if it was while still allowing him to shoot), but he was also using a nice aimbot and an autoname changer (Each load of a map generated a new name he would use). I played on the same server as this guy for 3-4 rounds and every time he used a shield and a P228.
It was impossible to hit the guy unless you were directly behind him or you nailed him with a 'Nade.Comment
