Feeling depressed? How about a game of Counter-Strike? Boomtown is reporting that a psychiatric hospital in Aarhus, Denmark is embarking on a bold scientific study to see if they can relieve depression by killing other people online. Ok, ok, that's not exactly true - they're taking the engine (really, the Half-Life engine) and adapting it into some sort of non-killing excursion for loonies, with what one hopes are fuzzy pink bunnies and lots of happy face textures:

Computer expert Christian Güttler will develop a special version of Counter-Strike for the hospital, which is ripped of all violent content, but still retains its unique 3D design, which is the key. Senior doctor Poul Videbech wants to use the maps for testing the navigational skills of patients, who have suffered from severe depressions over a long time.

Forgive me for being cynical, but I doubt it will be long before patients are accusing each other of being a "nub" and a wallhack invades the scene. I guess you can't knock them for trying something different, though.

If they're only using Counter-Strike for its maps, isn't it no longer Counter-Strike - it's just another Half-Life mod isn't it? Shouldn't all the instances of the words "Counter-Strike" just be replaced with "Half-Life"?

Well maybe everybody knows Counter-Strike one of the most popular online shooters out there and they want to play it, correct? They just made it less violent, well there is no violence.

I work for a GIS (Geographical Information Systems) company and we've often discussed the possiblity of using Half-Life (or other 3D game engines) to render 3D models, mainly because the end-user of the data would only have to shell out 20 bucks for a copy of Half-Life instead of thousands of dollars for GIS software.

They will have to start a new division of CAL and CPL called CAL-ins and CPL-pad for all the teams playing from institutions and padded rooms. Tard-LAN! These guys would be perfect for OGL :)
