    VAC Questions Answered

VALVe's Erik Johnson has answered some common questions that have popped up recently concerning VAC on the HLDS mailing lists. One of the most misunderstood issues has been how VAC will ban those players using CD Key Changers. Read below for Erik's response to this question.

Also note that the ban list will, for the time being, only ban offenders for 24 hours. Erik said that this penalty will be increased over time as they become more comfortable with how the system is working.
There have been many of questions about what we've been doing in the past few days. I'd like to get people up to speed on how things are going.[break="click through for erik johnson's email"]The ban list is now active, which means people that are detected cheating on a secure server will be banned from all secure servers for 24 hours. We'll be increasing the penalty for cheating dramatically over time as we become more comfortable with how the system is operating. We know of no false positives being generated currently, but we're going to be extremely careful we aren't banning legitimate players.

Many people have expressed concern over us banning players using CD-Key changers. We will not be banning any users that have legitimate reasons for using multiple CD-Keys (family members sharing a key, multiple clients behind a NAT, etc.). We're aware of all of the legitimate reasons for having multiple CD-Keys from one client, and users in these situations will not be affected.

Team Fortress Classic (along with Ricochet, Half-Life Deathmatch, and Deathmatch Classic) will have VAC support in the next Half-Life client release. We will be testing some of the features in the next

Half-Life/Counter-Strike release on Steam in the coming weeks.

Thanks to everyone that runs servers for the community. We know how important server administrators are in keeping the community running, and we'll continue to do things to make running a server a better experience.

lol, TFC has cheat protection. Both of the people still playing the game can be assured the other isn't cheating!

TFC actually has around the same amount of people playing DoD at any given time, usually maybe 100 more then DoD too.

And usually it's 5000 in both games.

tthey should ban ppl in an increasing amount of time by how many times they have been caught ie. 1st offense 24 hours 2dn offense 48 hours 3rd offense 7 days and so on. Or something of the sort

Since they stopped developing it for CS, in May...
We have decided to release a version of C-D for MODs not supported by Valve's anti-cheat (VAC). Once VAC supports a MOD, we will no longer support it.

Counter-Strike is currently the only MOD supported by VAC. C-D does not support Counter-Strike.

                      gets alot worse.

What do you all think the ban penalty should be increased to?

                      A week, month, year?

Making CS Steam-only would be a way to stop client hooking.

Forever. Who get caught with cheat, must buy a new HL. Thats good for VALVe and anti-cheaters too.

VAC can't detect the newest OGChook yet.
