That reviewer was a retard, how in gods name did he come up with the idea that Opera was a clone of CS ?

Yeah, CS lets you dive across buildings with Uzis and my dad is George Washington. Seriously.

Tree Wizard, he was saying Counter-Strike spawned a bunch of mods all wanting a piece of the gigantic pie that the cstrike mod got.

"You remember how it was. Everybody got into the mod-making craze in an attempt to cash in on some of the Counter-Strike fever--games like Global Operations, Tactical Ops, Gunman Chronicles, Opera, Firearms, even Day of Defeat. They all wanted to be the next Counter-Strike--maybe not in content but certainly in context--though none saw nearly the same amount of success that Counter-Strike did."

In an attempt to cash in on some of the Counter-Strike fever and maybe not in context but certainly in context explain it.

Oh yeah, battlefield 1942 does look like alot of fun but my comp can't handle it. I won't be getting a graphics card till sometime next year(this year I'm getting xbox) so I'm stuck with Counter-Strike. Heh, my comp can't handle smoke that well.

That reminds me, smoke is extremely dumb in Counter-Strike. People play Counter-Strike because they don't have any reason to upgrade their computers because it runs fine. If you throw a smoke you'll get quite a few people on your team to complain about it(granted they don't do it on global otherwise the other team would throw them like crazy). I have to turn and run away when I see smoke. I get 60-99 FPS but smoke(on medium quality) kills my comp.

smoke is actually a good in a match so they best not get rid of it =) And yea GPig CS is the game for cheap-skates like us =) If i had 1000 bucks i wouldnt buy a new comp id get a car. So CS will always have the cheap-skates. And to whoever said how many hardcore CS players there are. EVERY CAL clan ppl are hardcore players they practice like every single day. Now if thats not hardcore i dont noe what is

That's just plain dumb. I have WC3, and it's great. But I still play CS just as much as I did last month when I didn't have it. And before that I played MOH:AA (sorry for all the acronyms). But I played CS just as much as before I had it. CS has no challengers right now. Even a game like UT2003 (another one?!), a game that's built from day one to be an online winner, won't really challenge CS.

It's been around for so long now, and been fine tuned so much, that either you like it or you don't. Either you play it alot or you don't. My gaming consists around a 'flavour of the month' (like WC3) and CS. I bet most people on this site are like this. Or, you're poor and it's 'flavour of the six months'. To you I say, "ha".

I hardly think it'll be hard to make a game superior to CS, ever since 1.4 dropped. (Yes, I'm still bitching about that.) The hard part will be convincing people to move on to newer and better things...

The article pretty well got the point.

Good games raise overall game industry level.

How many CS players are around?

Now imagine the quality needed to make them swap games!

The CS killer will be a awsome, fun-to-play, quick-to-catch game; because it needs not only to be much better than CS, it also needs to unstuck all the CS players who will prefer to be doomed than quiting CS...

The bad thing about gamespots articles is that say are so damn long. Its about 6-7 pages long! Whats wrong with a good 1-2 page article. I read an abandonware article there, 8 pages.

Anyway, the article is good, a bit too long but good. The little girl playin halo is the best bit

This article is right games do replace other games and currently i think cs is on its last leg seeing as how its graphics havent really keep up with the times. And the delay of CS:CZ is just the final blow to cs. CS is unfortunately dieing exspecially with Warcraft 3 out now.
                        hUH? Have you PLAYED Warcraft?

CS has it all, imo. Not sure if there's any diablo 2 players, but that game was addictive as all hell, and it sucked. I played for almost 2 years. Actually had to uninstall it and give my cds away to stop playing it. CS is just as addictive, but it's actually good. I only bought 1 other game during my d2 time (bg2), and havent bought any since i've been playing CS. I wouldn't call this a detriment to the gaming industry. Rizzuh hit the nail right on the head. Companies are now forced to make outstanding games instead of mediocre ones, because it will be very tough to pull people away from these addictive games. Just friendly business competition :)

btw dont ever play diablo2, it sucks

Good games don't kill the market. Shitty knockoffs of good games do. It's not really surprising to have one good game come out, have other developers copy it, and then watch the copies bomb because they're inferior. This has been happening with FPSes for a good, long time. Anybody remember Requiem? Devastator? Or what's-its-name, the Wolfenstein knockoff, Mortyr?

For his sake, i hope The Opera team doesn't read that. Even saying that The Opera was made to "cash in" on CS' success is taking your life into your own hands.
