    So Good, It's Bad?

I saw this over at Planet Half-Life, apparently a Gamespot staff member named Amer Ajami has written up a column called So Good, It's Bad. The article is part of Gamespot's weekly feature called Gamespotting, and it asks if maybe Counter-Strike has become so popular that it has hurt sales of other games. The writer doesn't think so.
In fact, games like Counter-Strike are like medicine to our industry, for two main reasons. First, and obviously, if it's so damn good, people will buy it, and when they see that it's so damn good, they'll tell some friends, and they'll buy it. See a pattern? Good games spread like wildfire, and that's been the case since the 8-bit days. Chances are, a recommendation from your best friend is worth 10 times more to you than a glowing review from a game publication. Secondly, games like Counter-Strike cause developers to create better products. After the flood of me-toos has passed, a true successor always emerges to take the place of a game once held near and dear by the masses. Just look at the succession of Westwood and Blizzard real-time strategy games, or the id and Epic first-person shooters, or the EA and Papyrus driving games. A new Counter-Strike that's truly better than its predecessor in many respects, and not just an obvious attempt to ride its coattails, always emerges. And then people will flock to that game, tell their friends about it, and so on.
I agree. I personally believe that outstanding games like CS help to "raise the bar" on video game standards, and anything that makes games better is good, right? Read the article and weigh in with what you think in the comments.

Speaking for myself, CS was the first FPS that I played that I was actually interested in. I'd played Doom and Wolf 3D, but I was never really satisfied with the genre until I played the retail version at my cousin's place. Now it's safe to say that my eyes have been opened to the wide world of fragging. Thanks, Mr. Le.

The bad thing about gamespots articles is that say are so damn long. Its about 6-7 pages long! Whats wrong with a good 1-2 page article. I read an abandonware article there, 8 pages.

Anyway, the article is good, a bit too long but good. The little girl playin halo is the best bit

Well me not buying another game since HL is all the proof I need. But I'd rather play 1 great game than 2 or 3 not so great games.

This article is right games do replace other games and currently i think cs is on its last leg seeing as how its graphics havent really keep up with the times. And the delay of CS:CZ is just the final blow to cs. CS is unfortunately dieing exspecially with Warcraft 3 out now.

Yeah, the 70,000 it had last month and then the 70,000 it has this month really shows a very drastic decline. Poor CS.

More and more people are playing CS everyday.

There aren't any current rivals to CS so it will stay top for a long time to come. Besides Quake3 and its kin folk of course but it seems CS and Q3 aren't really rivals, you're either born 'that way' or not.

I will be playing CS years from now. Even if it stops being updated because CS2 is out or whatever. Hell, i've already spent more than 2.5 years of my life and it's still as fun as ever. control > gameplay > graphics.

shit, did I just go off topic?

Long time to come? ever heard of Battle Field 1942 that games gonna be the best game yet. check it out at http://www.bfnation.net/ I will prolly still be playing cs still because i have a shitty computer and cs is about all it can handle. But this Battle Field 1942 will take all of the hardcore gamers from cs.
