Actually, most thoughts tend to go toward "What do i edit to turn those damned things off?". Not the best thing to identify a map with.
Truly exciting? Well I don't know about that...but it adds so much flavor to the map. Any CS player can hear that audio clip and immediately their thoughts turn to cs_italy. It's the same with the cicadas in de_aztec or the roar of the oilrig in as_oilrig, etc. Now that's pretty powerful to have a piece of a game identified with in that manner.
Having a map that uses HL textures and Duplo block stairs might not be all that bad at this point. cs_church looks like it came straight out of Quake 1, and i found something inherently cozy about that. I think i'm getting to a point where i'd like to play on a MAP instead of a photoshop exercise or a nVidia endorsement. Your GeForce4 and 6nutzillionHz CPU are poor sources of opinion for a map.Comment

While I do agree that many people find the environmental sounds annoying and would rather they be turned off, I wasn't trying to comment on whether they were good/bad/ugly. I was trying to say (and perhaps I did it poorly) that people easily identify those sounds with particular maps and that kind of easily identification is a remarkable thing.

But for those who just can't stand them (such as yourself, I take it, mouth) it's not that tough to get rid of the looping sounds. However, in my opinion it borders on immorality, i.e. cheating, and therefore I'll keep my mouth shut.Comment

I don't really think that those sounds are any more remarkable than the "HAXOR" sign in de_vegas. It's easier to notice and in turn associate something with an element that sticks out like a rusty nail. It's like saying the bluescreen association with Windows is "remarkable" and "powerful". It might be infamous, but it's not really such a romantic quirk.Comment
