Professional Gaming In The Crosshairs

XSReality columnist Fred has written an article that takes a different view about professional gaming from the ones you usually read. The article is called The CPL, Pro Gaming, And All That Other Crap and provides the cynic's view of professional gaming.

With all talk about sponsorships, pro gaming, the CPL I feel we haven't heard from the cynics enough. Lets face it, its much more entertainment to be had from being real grumpy compared to being happy. So just for my enjoyment, lets have some pro gaming bashing here.



Those that have sponsorships. Enjoy it while you can. Once the companies figure out what this is all about it will dry out. For those that get airplane tickets to LANS, enjoy it. Suck the sponsors dry. If they are stupid enough to give you money, exploit it. For those that win a few bucks CPL competitions, save the money for something nice.

Jeez, I thought I was the only one who thought the whole idea of "professional gaming" was nuts. Cool! /me flips the bird to Angel Munoz. He's a jerk anyway. He gets really sensitive if you ever hint at the CPL not being a humungous success.



I hope console gamers get to have "pro gaming" though, that'd be funny. Then I can laugh at all the 12-year old retards with their little toy computers, getting money...

Fred's article had quite a few "facts" in it, but they seemed to be unsubstantiated and unsupported statements, i.e. stating that the target audience of the "sport" that sponsors are supporting doesn't have any money to buy the products that the sponsors are trying to peddle. That's not the only hasty generalization this guy made...I can understand where he's comming from and agree with some of it, but I think Fred's article is hampered by lack of solid evidence such as statistics, specific demographic figures, etc. A good argument but it needs some solid backing to move it past the realm of pure opinion.

But true. Where the potential for making money goes, so will sponsors. If they could sell a P4 at a greased pig wrestling contest, you'd see the Intel Pentium 4 Greased Pig Wrestling Summer Championship. Anyone who expect this to be a way of life can talk to some dot com fallouts about "forever". The simple fact remains that if your activity has spoiled little children with neglective parents and is outright more boring than curling, you're going to be a fad.



Better yet, ask paintball people about it being a "sport". Didn't you see the million dollar finals in paintball? Oh wait...lol.



Some things are fun activities and are to remain that way.



The CPL wants your money - Angel needs another yacht.
