    VAC Security Module Updated

Valve's Eric Smith has sent word along the HLDS mailing list that the Valve has updated server security modules again. As always, the updates will occur automagically. From the horse's mouth:
    Security module update

    *** This only affects Counter-Strike servers. ***

We've updated the public security modules again. Your Counter-Strike servers should update themselves automatically. If you find your servers are suddenly having problems, try restarting the servers.

These modules should detect OGC's OpenGl Hack 1.8 and will start reporting detected cheaters to our master ban list server. We won't be banning anyone yet, but we'll be gathering information about detected cheaters. You will see outgoing traffic to: 205.158.143.67:27013.

    Thanks.

    Eric Smith

It's sort of a bummer that players using this hack won't be banned immediately, but hopefully Valve is planning a horrible death for them in the future.

God, just ban them. I'm sure there's some stupid reason for this but I dislike playing with cheaters. Just go d/l the hack and look at the code or something like that. Why do you need to gather information? To see how many people cheat and if you should just let the game be overrun by cheats again?

I agree...Just ban those lamers. It isn't our fault that they can't practice and get their own skills. Instead they download them and ruin other peoples fun.

      Final answer. BAN THEN

You should check the OGC website and their forum ...

Yeah. These modules work well. They detect OGC OpenGL 1.9 as well. Eric left that bit out.

Can you imagine the fire and brimstone that would rain down as a result of VAC false-positives handing out global bans? I don't mind the idea, but Valve's been pretty good these days about riding that fine line between getting something out before the community whines it into obsolescence and getting something out PROPERLY before the community bitches that it doesn't work.

Well also alot of skilled players get accused for cheating, and if someone ppl find ways of getting ppl on this master ban list by making the server 'pretend' to detect cheats or something, ppl will be able to ban these ppl who aren't cheating and just about everyone else.

Even I, n00bish player sho started September with 1.3 get accused of cheating sometimes, because I have my lucky days where 16-1 is my score... well alot more lately too. (Yay for growing Skillz)
