de_chataeu is an excellent map but suffers on pub servers since few people know how to spell it right and search for servers that are playing it (including me). The bombsites are perfection and the two-leveled house with cave-ins is a very fun play atmosphere.

I probably hate Aztec the most.

in Beta 6.5, I used to LOVE Aztec. But with the release of Beta 7 (I think, it could have been 1.0 also) Aztec was changed around and it began to suck.

The #1 thing that makes it suck is the balance. The balance is most definitely toward the CTs. First of all, the CTs have better guns, let's put it at that (USP > Glock, M4 > AK IMO). Then you must take into account that the CTs get into better positions faster.

For example, take the bridge. The CTs only have to run a short way to get into position behind the abundance of crates in their end of the bridge. The Ts get there late, and have really nowhere to hide except behind those 2 small boxes in the cramped area at THEIR end of the bridge. (Hiding behind this block also happens to expose the entire body of the player to the double doors which will be discussed next.) So the Ts must throw grenades if there is any hope of flushing out CTs hiding behind the ruins. Surprise! Grenades fall through the bridge!

Ok, now the double doors. There is no argument that in this case, the Ts get to (their side) of the double doors first. If the Ts decide to rush, upon crossing the threshold of the door, they will find themselves in a corner. Basically they are at the vertex of the 2 CT routes to the door. So they will become massacred. Continuing rushing forth is not much of an option because there is little cover. If the Ts decide to camp, they also find themselves the unfortunate vertex of multiple CT routes. CTs may come bursting forth from the doors, the bridge (becuase they eliminated the bridge Ts so fast), the water, or from behind; sometimes simultaneously.

Finally, the water route is somewhat akin to suicide as getting up to the level of the map (via the stairs or the ramp) involves going under that little ceiling which exposes you to snipers fom the bottom up (so you don't see the sniper until your entire body is exposed). Then you die, simple as that (unless you are very lucky in which case you may be able to get a few kills at the bridge or wherever before being killed).

On a slightly more technical note, since B7 or 1.0, every single crate was replaced with a mayan ruin block. Considering that the objective of the map is to destroy the mayan ruins, why don't the Ts just blow up the big blocks sitting right next to their respawn? Gee!

                      /end of Aztec Rant

Edit: I didn't read any of the past comments anyway

Since when did aztecs layout change in 1.0?

You have to understand you can't just wade in and change the 3rd most played level on planet. Imagine if DaveJ added a 3rd route to dust?

Aztec is not really a pretty map to look at, it's the layout that makes it popular. If it was really that bad people wouldn't play it

The Since when did aztecs layout change in 1.0 was sarcasm btw.

Vegas fails to capture the look and feel of the actual place, but it's not so bad that it should get most of the votes and the roof spawn is chill. I don't like Survivor, but I've grown accustomed to some of the elements and the setting itself (snow) is refreshing after playing dust and aztec for a while. Chateau I think is perfection, I don't care if you don't agree, but it is. The Theme is great, the textures are so beautiful that you really get into it and it's well balanced enough to provide various conflict areas. Unlike the museum o' sundials.

My vote has to go to Piranesi. As a map it is clean, too clean and well made. Too much visual planning went into this (lol I'm weird) and it's just nothing unique or fun to look at. This commentary excludes all gameplay related imbalance. Campy.

I've never played Comrade and I'll never download it cuz I'm too lazy, but I would have really like to see it in 1.5. Narby, I'm just speculating, but is VALVe by any chance releasing Mapping Software to the hardcore mappers like yourself so that you can release some unofficial maps soon after CZ? If so, are you ever thinking of a Comrade remake or sequel for CZ?

I agree Chateau is an excellant map for atmosphere, the textures are really amazing. It's one of my favorite new maps.

Personally i think comrade needs work with it's visuals it's not really on a par with the standard of maps comming out for cs right now but i just don't have the time.

I was one of the level designer on CZ and i'd love to do more maps after its release.

Narby are you saying that CS maps are being judged now on their visual quality? I certainly hope that's not the case. I mean, haven't we all gotten past the visual thing yet?! CS is old & it's graphics aren't that hot anymore...yet many people still play it because of the gameplay. Yes you have to have some level of visual quality in order to maintain interest and the containment of one's lunch in one's stomach but you'd think at least in terms of maps, gameplay would be more important than how the map looks.

Then again CS's actual gameplay and the maps are, arguably, two different things in terms of the effects that graphics has upon them...so perhaps I shouldn't equivocate in this situation.

No but I think a map should look good AND play well, aztec inferno diddn't really shine in terms of visuals but they seem to play fairly well. It would be nice to release some maps that do both.
