    OGC 8.5 Disabled

FLeK0 has informed up that Online Game Cheats Hook, or just OGC, version 8.5 has been disabled by the latest security module sent out by Valve.

Valve's anti-cheat does not detect the cheat (hence no banning or anything), but it does prevent the cheat from working altogether, which is intentional on part of the OGC developers. "currently we patch the custom dll loader that loads the downloaded secure module dll. we perform a checksum check." said System, saying how easy the anti-cheat's detection portion is easy to defeat. "if the module is new we unload ogc. you can still play hl."

A good question is whether Valve wants to know who cheats or if they simply want to stop the cheats from working (temporarily).

Update: OGC 9 has now been released. It works, for now.

I like that it doesn't ban the cheaters and I get to own their skilless ass for a few rounds until they cry and leave.

Yeah it's nice but for how long it will work??I don't know much, but i know hat cheating in CS will not die just like that..there will be more 'n more cheats hwo will 'destroy' CS(in gameplay) and all us NICE guys in having fun playing the CS.What i think Valve should do is to concentrate on creating anti-cheat program, not the one that will come with new patch, you know something like HLGuard or CheatingDeath..this is specialy usefull for many people hwo still uses 56k modems and not to download 1.1.1.x but to download something like CDeath start it 'n go play CS..and sure that ACheat program should have auto-update when it starts..all the best

This is what it looks like to go on a secure server with OGC 8.5. The hook will detect if valve is trying to detect it and will shut itself off.

I think VALVe is showing a good effort. People should be pleased with their efforts so far.

He is talking about XQZ2 which requires a simple hex to get by HLG with the new OGC opengl loader.

Valve isnt only showing great effort, i think now that they finally got their asses up and startet the VAC approach to cheats, cheats will soon die altogether. Cheats have become less over the last few months, with OGC alone being the only real <threat> to gamers.

with this one soon to die out [ system isnt really showing anything but resolution with his efforts to keep OGC undetectable ], we can look forward into a better future for our children [ omg ]

only bad thing about "losing" the cheaters: no1 will be able to blame their own incapability on cheaters anymore ;P

I think It's a bit early to break open the champaign bottles yet. OGC 9 is going to be one hell of a monster. I think system loves the challange, he isn't going to go down easy. I am very anxious to see what the second installment of VAC is. Valve is a big company with many talented people. System is one person with only 3 years of programming experiance. The problem is HL was not made with hook cheating in mind, and it's ancient in software terms, which makes it as easy to hack as a celery stalk.

But I think system has failed in the long run. He has shown developers what cheating can do to a community (thus...customers), and from this point on game developers are going to put that much more effort into stopping cheats. In the future hacking a game is not going to be something someone with a fair amount of knowledge of win32 API programming can do.

                            #9 Nice point MikeJ.

BTW, I don't care if VAC doesn't detect OGC 8.5 but disables it. Cheating-Death never intended to work in the way of detection and was quite successful.

I'm now taking bets on how long it'll be before the Valve bashing sets in.

I mean, whatever Valve do, it's gonna happen.

                              24th December 2005

Headline - "Valve Software engage World Peace, find cure for cancer, throw N-Sync off bridge"

Headline - "Riots abound as public oppose Valve peace measures"

                              26th December 2005

                              Sigh.
