Mr_Bond has done an article detailing the history of Counter-Strike art: when art meets guns. Find about the early days where CS-Nation, this very site, had a strong part in creating the art community and get in the know about the current way of things: 3d studio max lovin'. Here's a bit from Mr_Bond's article:
Originally, to use the CS 3d-models, pictures were made using the CS models which were posed in HLMV (Half-Life Model Viewer) or Quake Scene Builder. These images, however, were hampered by poor quality and a low polygon output. In short, people could use the HLMV to pose models in ways not possible in screenshots but the output quality was the same.Read it and be sure to post your feedback in the comments!
Then along came a guy who revolutionized 3d CS Art; FoxTrot-Niner. For the first time, images were produced with player models that looked better than those in game. Models could have fingers and be "mesh-smoothed" so they no longer had to have rectangular heads and arms. Over the last year and a half, Scud has seen a great variety in the way people have created CS-Art. Scud feels that the varying popular style of CS Art is based on "what artists thought were 'cool' at the time."
