Sentinel goes into BETA test stage

A new anti-cheat program is on the horizon- but will it work? Well, the guys over at Sentinel think so.
A lot of people said that "Sentinel is never going to be out", "when will we have it" or "why don't you release it". We've been asked those questions a million times, but now (finally) Sentinel has gone into the "Beta Test Phase". This means that we are now seeking Beta-Testers for sentinel.
Apparently, this program has been long awaited by many and, to some, this release signals a new phase in the on-going battle against cheats. This is a BETA release, so they are in search of some BETA testers. If you think you've got what it takes, give them a visit.

I personally have faith that Sentinel will be an effective anticheat...they seem serious and målrettede.

so my submission for a map name turns into the name of an anti-cheat program.

Fucking anti-cheat shit, why can't they just all create one, and then use these obviously available human resources to create very regular updates.

That actually is a very good idea. Although one anti-cheat=only one to crack, with more ppl on it they could work harder to combat probs.

It doesn't matter how easy they are to crack or not. It will take the cracker a day or 2 to find out how the anti-cheat system is functioning and to think up ways to bypass it. It will take the skilled cheat-coder perhaps a day to modify a cheat enabling it to bypass anti-cheating provisions. But then it will take perhaps 2 days to distribute the cheats to various sites, and then maybe a day or so for the cheats to upgrade.

Now if all these anti-cheat guys came together and created a counter-cheat system that auto-updated every day (the first time you loaded CS up that day, a minute or so waiting is worth having no cheats) no matter how easy it is to crack, the cheats would never get out in time. I can't believe it's taking so long for someone to do this.

And I'm sure all these people working on anti-cheat projects would be able to make it slightly harder to hack, which would be a partial bonus :) A single anti-cheat measure would eliminate all these anti-cheating sects that the community is creating, whereby servers have a single type of anti-cheat system, meaning messing around downloading god knows how many client programs.

yeah thats great but valve will be the only ones who can modify the game in such a way to make it full proof, why have to do so much work everyday when valve can just modify things in the game so cheats wont work. this is based on the assumption that in the future they can, as so far it hast worked. point is id rather have somehting that worked instead of somehting that just beat the cheaters to it...otherwise THEY WILL find a way.

cheetarah, you think Valve can find a way to render cheats useless without daily updates? it is highly highly unlikely (and if so, would not be for CS) without providing completely serverside play, which would require intense pings and huge download capacity to run at all.

im not saying then can, it would be more convinient if they could tho dont you agree?

I remeber CS-Nation saying that would have complete coverage of the Sentinel release about a month or two ago, valve must like the Sentinel team because they delay updates just the same amount of time :)

I'm becoming skeptical of anti-cheats. First of all people seem to be quite insecure with anti-cheats on. Many feel that they are ineffective, which is true, but they are so insecure that people who do well are often accused.

Just two days ago, I was 29-2 on cs_assault and 19-2 on de_dust2.... I was being voted against and people were saying to ban me. Luckily the admin there (who was playing) did not do anything.

Frankly... just 'cuz people play good doesn't mean they ch34t.

i sympathise james bond, mainly cos some paranoid clan banned me recently because I regularly topped their scoreboard :-/ They never even warned me me which is even more annoying because I don't cheat and would have liked to see their "proof" other than one members constant assertions of 'wut he thunk is goin dahn'

The problem with the single anti cheat solution is that although it's ideal it's up to the teams to agree to use one system/program and a lot of them would end up programming updates for someone else's original work. Then there's the problem we've already touched on - the general paranoid attitude in the cs community, why should one anticheat team trust another with their work? Finally, whilst I'm no programmer I'd imagine there are only so many ways to do things - I hope it's not possible for the anticheaters to run out of ideas before the cheaters

To tell the truth I'm not even convinced that valve has the solution, so the true experience of cs will be limited to lans then I guess :-(

                            DOOMED! WE'RE ALL DOOMED!!
