    netcode guide

A furious angel, not your girlfriend :I, has posted a guide to tweaking the netcode. Here's a bit:
cl_rate "9999" is the speed which you allow to send commands between you and server the higher you set it the faster your connection needs to be this is somewhere between ADSL and 56.6 level cable users have been known to set it to 14000.

cl_resend "2" sets the resend count the default is 3 however 2 should be more than enough and you dont wanna waste too much bandwidth/time resending commands on failed

cl_timeout "1024" is the number os milliseconds you wait before server connection times out default is something silly and if theres a little bit of lag you never connect. 1024 is a reasnoable amount of time.

Tell them to update it again though! :) This time to the Dynamix standards, T2 can hold 128 pople in a game and have no lag at all.

wtf, no it can't. T2 lags when you get 64 people into one game unless you have a huge connection. HL is the same. If you get a lot of lag in CS you need to look at your settings.

Maybe Valve should ask Dynamix about the netcode. I'm sure that company will be quite helpful.

cl_resend - is the time in the seconds the client waits before retrying the "connect" command if the server didn't answer. this command has nothing to do with ingame commands.

cl_cmdrate - not obsolete, number of client movement updates send to server per second. default 30 (good value) higher values *may* increase ping.

cl_updaterate - number of updates send from server to client per second. "50" is much too high. keep the default value of "20" to avoid lagging.

host_framerate - only available in single player mode.

cl_pred_fraction, cl_pred_maxtime, uprate, cl_adaptive, pushlatency - non valid obsolete commands.

after all, most of these settings are unnecessary, so just keep your old ones - Martin

                    agreed martino,

that guide is almost useless as he doesnt really explain all of those commands in a detailed manner.

cl_updaterate doesnt lag you. cl_cmdrate does. try it.

I believe cmdrate lags you because of the fact that the server pauses between each client update for a few ms, the more you update the more opportunity for a pause. If the server is using the UDPsoft pingbooster where it will run as fast as it can, I think it shouldn't increase your ping.
