I went out and did some reading and your right standard body armor wouldn't stop rifle rounds. Unless it had a metal plate in it which some do over your heart. BUT and this is big but level 3 body armor can it's not standards issue only used with barricaded suspects and standoffs can stop 7.62 MM ammo. Many also have level 2 leggings that come down to cover you upper legs. Now do you think that elite Special Forces and military are going to be using body armor that is meant for street cop's NO? So body armor should stop rifle rounds though after few you would be riving in pain and out of the fight.

I'm also willing to admit that my reading say no helmets can stop a 7.62x51 at muzzle velocity. You had to be at least 100 meters away for the top of the line helmets to help. But with metal plates sold as an extra held in place by step you can stop a 5.56mm rounds and any and all pistol rounds. You wanna see whay high end body armor dose against pistols and shot guns take look at the Hollywood shoot out. The suspects shrugged off multiple hits from police while casually walking along. But this has a flip side if you wanna see what 7.62x51 ammo can do look at some of the police cars, tree, and so on from after the battle. below is are links to where I got my info.
