An eagle-eyed CS-Nation reader informed me that Leon Hartwig, CS' Linux guy and a Valve drone, posted some interesting info about Steam and 1.4 on the Steam beta forums.

You won't see the CS dev team as active here because we really have no need to be. CS is well established. The current high-maintenence (sic) support issues are mostly for Steam (which, by the way, will not be going live with CS 1.4; the public releases of HL 1109 and CS 1.4 will be totally non-Steam).

Steam is a content delivery system, in case you're wondering. It basically downloads the game to your hard drive in a few minutes and is only really useful for broadband users. This probably hints that Valve will focus on Steam as a way to make cash, completely bypassing their publisher.



Personally, I think this is great. I like the game being on my hard drive.

Yes, that is interesting no steam in 1.4 even tho it's in the beta :os Oh, also, it's not just gfor downloading the game, rizz, next version will ave the in and out of game messenger, etc, so it SHOULD be useful once it's totally done.

Its probably because some retards already hacked it and valve found out how hard its going to be to really make cs cheat free. Expect Steam around 2008, around the same release as TF2

And I was also wondering, with steam, beacause its like an ingame downloader/loader, does this mean that apps like Gamespy and All seeing eye will stop working?

Tracker and the anti-cheat aren't related to Steam.



What Valve is trying to do with Steam, in my opinion, is to cut Sierra out of the loop and make more money for themselves. But it's a good idea, imagine being able to Steam TF2 before it hits store shelves. I'd do it, just because I'm impatient.

I don't know about your theory Rizzuh. Sierra carry some serious weight in the gaming industry so why should Valve want cut their ties?



I think Valve are using Steam as a distribution system to prevent illegal copies being distributed because with Steam, everything is cached. Steam are in turn using this opportunity to iron out the bugs in their system before it goes live.



PS: I'm also confident this characteristic is also the reason the DoD team even considered volunteering their mod for testing.

Steam doesn't bear any logos or mention of Sierra (I've heard). Also, the support site wouldn't exist on Valve's site, nor would the beta system even be under Valve's control. Sierra isn't publishing Steam, so it's a chance for Valve to bypass Sierra's QA and profit margin.
