The Half-Life Remote Console (HLRC) is a 100% Java-based administration and management system for the Half-Life Dedicated Server (HLDS). The HLRC provides a platform for the development of plug-ins that can both react to game events, as well as submit commands to the game.

The screenshots show the map looks to be pretty good, although somewhat dark inside areas. If you decide to check out the screenshots, beware of the gator crap it tries to install.

What I don't understand is if it's written in Java, why do we need specific versions for different platforms? I must have misunderstood.

Well, the JRE(Java Runtime Enviornment) comes packaged with the HLRC Server and Client, so you essentially just have to modify the XML config file, and start up the HLRC Server. But the JRE's are different for the different OS's. Also, the bat file that you use to start the server up is a little different across Linux, Windows and OS X.
