    next version preview

I've updated our new version preview page with all the latest information, rumors, and whatnot on Counter-Strike 1.4. Know what Tracker is? Maybe not, so get your ass in the know.

In the coming weeks we'll be adding various 'information' sections, so stick around.

Once you have read the preview page, I want to draw peoples attention to this line:
The first question which was raised by the audience is what Valve/Gearbox is going to do to resolve the huge problem of cheating. While the team would not go into details - for fear of giving cheaters ammunition to defeat the fixes before they're even released.
Now that you've finished laughing....you were laughing right? I mean, I never thought a line straight out of U.S. propaganda could be used by a software development company for their own purposes. Now while you might accept the line from the U.S. in the context of national security, at the expense of your's and other's rights, is it really applicable to software development?

Lets see, if this paltry information - sketchy details of possible anti-cheat implementations could allow the defeat of anti-cheat software before it is released, what hope is there once it is actually released. At the most, the most, those details might do is peek a hacker who likes a nice ol challenge's interest, but the idea of being able to hack code that you don't have access to, that doesn't even exist, at least physically and publicly; is stupid. Furthermore its blatant stupidity they expect you just to nod and say "fine" to.

My whole gripe is with valves response to cheating in the community. We know nothing about what they are really doing. So all we have to go by is their actions, and their actions are inconsistent with their expressed purpose while being also being deceptive and confusing. You know what I mean, firstly PB not being supported by valve, I'm just another cs player, but I've read as much as I think there is about that whole fiasco and I still don't understand valves response. You'd think the PB creator (not going to go look for his name) could explain it but he just tries to pass off "I'm as bewildered as you" in his interview, which frankly strikes me as very odd. And then there is this, the idea that they can't tell us anything about what they are doing, only that they are doing it, because it might "compromise" them. Which I hope you by now also find a little, odd.

What does that equal for me? Absolute ZERO faith in valve as a publicly responsible company which cares about the needs of the market that pays their bills.

Oh and if any Americans patriotism was harmed by the first paragraph, sorry, but its there for context, not for a argument about the tragic recent events. The quoted line IS a direct copy of the American stance to releasing evidence prior to and justifying the attack on another country, and I believe only in the current political climate in America could Valve have possibly passed that off as a reason not to answer a legitimate question by their consumers.

I very much agree with you Black Fair, but I think Tony Ray(PB creator) is "bewildered" because the Valve Suits pretty much said to him, "Screw you and all you done to help us, we'll handle it on our own" And now that they've seen the HUGE problem with cheaters they aren't as ambitious about saving the honest players as before. I think Ray never saw the b*tch slap by Valve coming. Valve needs to get their act together and stop trying to make a profit off CZ, anti cheat software is a LOT more important to me than some stupid single player game.

Black, I think you may be reading between the lines and seeing something that isn't really there. The current political climate has zilch to do with Valves corprate policy. Valve just doesn't want to give away the details of their project so any hackers could work some counter-offensive together. It seems to make sense to me, they shouldn't explain the anti-cheat until it is in effect.

As to the whole PB issue, there were a lot of issues with PB. I enjoyed the fact that it was there but I think the reason he was "slapped" had more to do with money that anything else. I mean, why would Valve hire a third party programmer PB to work on something like this when they have a staff that they could have work on it (which is exactly what they are doing).

I'm confident that while Valve may be slow off the mark they are normally very successful with whatever it is they do.

In the meantime some add ons like Jedi for Admin mod have helped to counter the cheats that are present.

Whats the point it will only get hacked by the 3leet groups of [HLH] ,[HTTE], and mYgOt. There is no use why is VALVE setting themselves up for dissapointment. It's so sad build up all of the Anti-Cheaters confidence just so that H4XORS can crush it. Oh well too bad so sad.

Release date for 1.4: 2003, add the delay required by valve, and it will be about 3rd quarter of 2003, i think 1.4 will come quite a bite late :)
