Geekboys, the site that looks like a BBS (in a good way) goes behind the netcode in a new article designed to explain the netcode to the advanced, or "professional," gamer. In it, they describe their problems with the existing HL netcode and some settings that may help alleviate your frustrations if you have similar problems. Take a gander!

About the advantage for 56k, I think it is bullshit. I have always been on 1.5Mbit cable and had to go back to 56k for a while until I get DSL. Well, I can tell you it plays a hell of alot easier with ping 30 then with ping 180+. I can not get near the scores I got on cable.
Have fun!Comment

Basically, a person who is lagged 400ms behind "real time" (the ACTUAL locations on the server) can fire at someone who is actually 400ms ahead of where they appear to be, and the hit still counts. This is why you may noticed that sometimes you are fleeing behind some cover, you are completely IN cover, but you're taking hits. If you die your body warps back to where it appeared on the attacker's screen when he was shoothing at you.
This gives HPBs an unfair edge, as they can attack you, and despite your reflexes, you cannot escape.
The new netcode does nothing about the lag-warping HPBs either, as the interpolation that is done (and that always HAS been done in fact, despite what this article claims) is not sufficient. If you have 400+ ping and terrible packet loss, you're almost impossible to hit, and you can kill people who aren't even actually where they appear to be.Comment

Oh and how about this scenario - 400 ping sniper jumps out from behind a wall and shoots at you. On his screen, he simply strafe-jumps into a firing position and shoots, and you die.
On your screen, you see him come into view but you die no matter WHAT action you may take.
Think about that. Your fate is sealed before you even have a chance to intervene.Comment
