    CPL Rankings

CSports.net has updated its unofficial CPL rankings. It turns out that X3 is actually a better clan.
14 new clans enter the rankings in this update, including the long awaited appearance if X3 who despite coming second at the World Championships, have taken the top spot from NiP, with the new World Champions being pulled down by their 4th place finish as last years MPlayer Europe CPL event.
I hope that kind of proves that all these so-called rankings mean nothing, until it gets down to the game. You can find the listings here.

Average results is a dumb way of ranking players. If you go into only 1 tourney and win it, you're suddenly number 1 because your average is 100. Then you can just retire for the rest of the year.

The ATP tour (tennis) uses total points, which is the right way to go. Or at least require a minimum of <n> tournaments if you're going to use an average.

Good to hear from you again and thanks for the feedback.

Rankings and leagues are always open to debate. In the world CS rankings I personally think that the result at the WC most accurately reflects the current world rankings of the participating teams. However I also think you need to be fair on the Official CPL rankings here. As with most official ranking systems they reflect the performance of a larger number of teams (currently 278 in the database) over a more sustained period of time than 4 days (in our case it is 18 months). The fact is that 12 months ago NiP came 4th in a small event and this has pulled down their rankings. It would be quite unfair to ignore this fact and try to adjust the algorithm to get the team a lot of people think should be at the top of the rankings to be at the top. If this was justifiable then Manchester United would currently be top of the Premier division after their 5-0 thrashing of Derby County yesterday, the England rugby team would be number one in the world after thrashing of the World Champions last month, England would be top of the test cricket rankings after their current performance against India and The German football team would sit well below the English team in the football world rankings after their 5-1 humiliation. But that is not how world rankings generally work and we try to be reasonably uncontroversial and stick with the same basic concept with our rankings.

I hope this helps explain it better :-)

this is total crap, nip have came 1st in 4 comps ad 4ths in one, and x3 have came 1st in 2 comps.

my way of thinkings points out that nip have came 1st in 4, thats double than x3, so why the fricken hell are x3 1st. this is just another atempt of the cpl to make it so the US clans ar n1, cpl ur one sided, x3 loss the champ to determ whos n1, and u put them n1, what u gona do next, give x3 the 50 grand??

Ehhh X3 best clan in the world? Maybe they should beat NiP first before they deserve the current ranking.

NiP should the number 1...the tournament where they finnsihed 4th they probabaly didn't even use their best players etc.

Actually the official CPL Rankings are worked out by CSports.net an entirely independent company to the CPL. Within CSports.net the task falls to me and I am British, in fact we all are.

Believe you me we would love NiP to be the top clan in the rankings However there really is no way of escaping the hard facts.

                      1. The Official rankings represent an average performance over the last 18 months.

                      2. NiP had an appalling result 12 months ago in a relatively minor event (MPlayer only had 26 teams). In fact in that event they were beaten by the 4th, 7th and 10th placed teams and the rankings reflect this.

                      3. X3 came first in a 48 team event at the same time that NiP were at MPlayer and have only recently were beaten by NiP.

                      4. No ranking system can take into account the soundness of team selection by the teams.

In essence X3 were beaten narrowly in a big event by one team and NiP were beaten by 3 teams in a small event hence NiP ended up lower. To ignore these facts or to mathematically fudge them away would be to totally destroy the integrity of the rankings.

As a comment I would suggest that NiP and X3 are currently pretty equal in ability. The result was after all 2-1 in matches. I would however emphasise that in common with other ranking systems the Official CPL Rankings do not attempt to measure the current abilities of the teams that is what each individual event does and currently NiP are the best. The rankings are a long term measure and currently X3 measure up better due to some weakness in NiPs performance 12 months ago. As time goes by this event will drop out of the rankings and NiP will rise to the top of that as well.

There are many ways to do the ranking and we have tried a lot of them. With the paucity of events this reasonably simple ranking system provides on balance the most believable results given that its role is to reflect sustained performance. However we do not by any means have all the answers, we just have a head start. All the data is on the website I would truly be happy if you or someone you know can take the data (easily available on the site) for the top 10-20 places and produce a result that is better and defensible. As a reasonably competent mathematician and scientist it would satiate my inquisitive mind to point out the easy solution that I have missed and at the very least it is a good pressure test of the validity of the work that we have put into this :-))

I am very easy about how the result of this debate turns out. However I am quite keen that the result is fair to all concerned including X3.

Way back when we started the Official rankings supporters of NiP were very keen to point out in a number of emails that NiP should be represented in the rankings as they were derived from e9. After some debate with CPL Europe we accepted this view which resulted in the team clearly stated as "NiP formerly known as E9" being first in the rankings until last week.

"NiP formerly known as E9" have been in the rankings nigh on 6 months now and yet up until last week we have not received a single email or seen a post anywhere suggesting that this was the wrong decision, despite close to 100 thousand page impressions and a number of mentions on various websites each time we updated the rankings.

As someone who was put under a fair bit of pressure on the first change you can imagine that I am a bit peeved that NiP's supporters now want the rankings changed back to my original interpretation.

Perhaps the best way for this to be sorted once and for all is for someone from NiP/e9 to get in touch with ewatson@csports.net and I can try to come up with the most logical and fairest answer.

Actually I couldn't care less but since I have nothing better to do...

Have you thought about adding the number of "events played" to "avg. points" and rank the clans after that score?
