    CPL Sources

The CPL is in full swing today. We won't have interviews or media for a few days now, so check out the other great sites that offer some CPL news. We'll cover the big matches.
    • domain of games - owned by frank nuccio of cpl fame, dog is actually very community-oriented. run by dedicated cs fans who give you the full story and probably the best match coverage out there.

    • adrenaline vault - game lovers who have the best pictures, misc. media, interviews, and lecture coverage. while they have game wrap-ups, they don't have nearly the live coverage of dog. they'll probably cover the byoc and avp2 events better, though.
We're still trying to get in reach with Ksharp, but n@rby, cliffe, and Mr. Nuccio have all promised me some good pictures.

Well they not rest until they dominate and commercialise everything?

    Gamespy's younger brother?

Actually wait till Gspy grab them up.

DoG isn't for-profit, as far as I'm aware.

avault is, as you said, more of the faceless media type, but I don't think they're totally there yet -- not many gaming sites are.

I'm observing that these competitions always have some sort of lil whiny bitch controversy: UK team crying about the rules being too americanized. Fragile egos/sense of masculinity colliding on a scale of CPL will always result in widespread bitching and crying. If they are "pro-gamers" they should try and act like it. Even though we all know there is no such thing as a "pro-gamer".

rizzuh is correct. We are totally non profit. In fact it actually cost Frank money to do it all :0 However, I'm not going to say there is anything wrong with getting money, especially when it is at no cost to the people recieving the service. People have gotten used to everything being free on the internet, and have a negative knee jerk reaction whenever they hear the word money, even if it is not about their money. In the case of websites money means that you can do things that people without money can't do. You can usually dedicate more time and energy to something you are being payed for, because you don't have to spend time and money at something else trying to have enough money for food and shelter. You can also provide services others can't afford, such as hosting demoes or flying your people to every event that happens.

At DoG we've been lucky. Frank has been very gracious to cover the costs of webhosting and bandwidth, provided game servers, and done a LOT for the community. We've also had the fortune to get some really great guys to help us with the site. I can't begin to name them all but obviously there are some that contribute just an enormous amount of their time to the community, like Midway, for which we are very happy to have. Recently we had governmentflu step up and offer to provide bandwidth and servers to host demos, which is something we have been striving to do for the community for a long time. This just happened today and I am very thankful to him for this. I've racked my brain trying to find ways to do it and he came along and solved all those problems :)

Frank is really cool, and a lot of people don't know much more about him than that he is with The CPL. He's been doing community stuff long before he ever got involved with The CPL. In fact, The CPL got involved with Frank because they saw how dedicated he was to the community and what a great job he did at running tournaments. Frank has been doing stuff for the community forever. Before games came along he was doing ice hockey leagues and other stuff as well as doing game competitions out of his software store. Later he started doing Domain of Pain and did leagues and raffles and all other kinds of cool stuff. When I saw everything Frank was doing for the community in the Domain of Pain days I was really inspired. When he started looking for some people to help him run his site I found that I had finally found a way to repay the community for all the fun I had had in their forums, on their web sites, and on their game servers. All for free. So I hooked up with Frank and have been doing stuff for his site ever since.

Since then a lot has changed. Frank is too busy with The CPL now to be directly involved with the site, and so the DoG community that he started with Domain of Pain has run it for him. We switched to Esports after realizing that a lot of the CS esports community had really grown up around Domain of Pain/Domain of Games, and that we could do a much better job at that than covering the same thing a gazzillion other sites are covering.

Now, through all this, we never started looking for ways to make money or did it for money. The community has always and will always come first. That's something we are proud of, but at the same time that doesn't mean that we wouldn't think it would be cool to get money as long as it didn't hurt the community. It would allow us to even better serve the community by having more giveaways, raffles, contests and other neato stuff like that. Considering how big we are getting it wouldn't surprise me if money sneaked into the equation at some point in the future, which is probably still years away.

I don't think less of Avualt just because they have money. I think it's great that some people have found ways to serve the community and make a living off of it. Look at Red Cross workers. They are providing something very noble and a humanitarian effort, but they have to eat and sleep somewhere, so they have to be paid. A web site serving the community that has money to pay people is no different. If there is a difference between Avualt and DoG, I wouldn't point money out as the determining factor. The difference would be in that we are more deeply inbedded into the CS community because that is where we have always been, and that is where our roots are. We know more about the CS community because we, to some extent, are the community, or I should say a part of it at least. There are some sites out there who are JUST after money, and while that isn't something that is totally evil (that is what a business is) it certainly isn't good for the community. My belief is that as long as you put the community first you can't go wrong. If money happens to become a part of it, and it doesn't effect how you serve the community, then it should certainly be seen as a good thing and not a bad thing.

Yeah we don't the CPL wants to commercialise CS which will ruin the community feel, despite what they say.

I also did not necessarily just mean Avault and DoG eventually they will be taking over all sorts of things, how long will it be before we have CPL Nation and CPL run CS.net.

Look at what they have done already just a few things.

Age limit (when most players are under 16 WTF?)

Real names (Err it isn't a real sport yet)

                  Crap (lots of it)

Face it gamers will never be pro's as even if they are it doesn't last as games are always changing with technology and things liek that. And the pro-gamers tend to spend all their days playing games because they are contrary to what they say no-life-geeks.

Olol and the PC terms for CPL things like offensive and defensive teams Lmao, it is a game not a real sport being a fantasy thing which isn't necessarily PC is what it is all about.

I reckon Gamespy will buy the CPL at some point then the world will truly end. Although Gspy despite the commercialsied bits have more of a fun, community feel than the CPL so maybe that is a good things. Especially as Gspy have the money to do good.
