Tony Ray of PunkBuster fame, has gone ahead and posted his views to their forums. Here's a juicy bit:
Particularly troubling to me are all of the people surmising that the PB Team used the community or left due to greed to some other such nonsense. What was said in our news post is the accurate and full truth. The current version of PunkBuster cannot be appreciably improved without support from the game developers. We have tried many times and in many ways over the past year to get such support and have failed miserably each time. I have no idea why. Offers were made to do work for free, for the symbolic sum of $1, and for reasonable fees. All types of offers drew zero interest. I'm baffled. Yet we continue to desire relationships with any and all game developers/publishers who would like to support our system and service. It is a dis-service to the community to continue trying to develop PunkBuster when the few remaining flaws cannot be properly addressed and there is no hope that they ever will be.Well if screen capture doesn't work then there's no way I'd want a cheat-free game! You can read the rest of Tony's post right 'ere!
Also, for the record, we continue (at our expense - as we have all along) to maintain multiple Master PB Servers for the Admins and Players who wish to continue using PunkBuster in its current form. I realize that there are new cheats and hacks. Despite some of the baloney being written, each of them can and will easily be detected if we ever resume development of the HL version of PunkBuster. However, there is no purpose in continuing updates when more pressing problems cannot be resolved without support (#14 problems, too many restarts, unnecessary lag, screen capture denied, etc.). It is just delaying the inevitable. However, we do expect to have the linux pbctojpg program finished and ready for download very soon. It was almost completed when general development was suspended and we intend to wrap that up for linux PB Admins who have been expecting it for a long time.
