    cs cheating article

The PAGN (Pan Asia Gaming Network) has baked up an article/rant/long text thing on cheating in Counter-Strike.
This were all the past of course. Right now, we're all playing Beta 6.2 or Beta 6.5. This era, is what I call the Golden Age of Cheats. Cheat/hack pages were plentiful. Not only could one see through walls or change their skins at their own will, the "best" cheater I've seen went through all this: He used a sub-mod for Counter-Strike, of which claims that they are simply a more Professional way of playing Counter-Strike and to train newbies. I will not mention names here. He used scripts/hacks which allowed him to see through walls and allow him to perform the Silent AwP. He also changed EVERY single model (except the ones which are used by the Sub-mod) to make the Counter/Terror models spikey at every single joint, thus making hiding useless (since the spikes poked out of every wall in the game). He also tweaked his Texgamma, Lightgamma and Lambert until even the darkest maps were bright and "shining".

The sight of this (especially in a Lan shop) really disgusted me. The worst part is, everyone in the server was saying he was a pro etc. There were more hacks/cheats of course. The ones I mentioned are among the most common and most easily found ones. The Pacfusion/paGan servers become a cheaters paradise, since there was no fool proof way of finding out if the players were using such cheats.
Pretty informative and a generally good read, kills time until your copy of Deus Ex arrives (heh). Thanks to stomped for the pointer.

    cs cheating article

Good ol' reliable Cypher & Co. over at Counter-Strike Center have posted a cheating article written by Trooper. It details the new controversy over the recent decision made by Gooseman on a new server option in CS 1.2 to enforce the default models.
I have repeatedly read over the past few days the complaints of those who

want custom skins. Despite the hue and cry, skins are not going away. Skins will now be an option, and admins can change that option to on or off. The fear of the skin community is largely unfounded. Given that it takes a modicum of skill to skin anyway (I sure as hell can't do it) I believe the hard core skin players realize this. I also believe they are not the ones complaining. To paraphrase Shakespeare in Hamlet "Methinks the player doth protest too much." Custom skins are a major source of cheating, and everyone knows this. Why do they complain about it so? Their responses are varied, from "it will ruin the game" to "you can't stop every cheater, they'll always find a way around" to "well, if you have a good admin, it's not a problem." Let's look at these in turn. [...]
I must say, Trooper has done an outstanding job on the article and I wholeheartedly agree with him. Sure, you definitely cannot stop all the cheaters, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't take any action against them and simply idle and watch your game degrade with rampant cheating. People are basically saying: "I'd rather have my custom models and skins than an equal playing field", and that's getting to the point of absolute absurdity. Remember the last time the CS Team decided to lock models in an upcoming patch but the response from the community was so overwhelmingly negative they decided against it? Now they know the inevitable truth against this cheat and are finally taking action, I said it back then, and I'll say it now. I'll be glad to see them lock the models and skins.

By the way, they're only locking the 3rd person weapon and player models (to my knowledge), there will still be the v_ weapon models and those are the ones that people download the most. This is a team game, not Quake 3, and I'd rather be sure that my opponents have no advantage over me because of a cheat, than playing with paranoia in every server.

This has been the Big Ass™ post of the day. Oh and vapor's (read: mine) Klipsch Promedia 4.1's and Prophet III is "kewllwwlwlwel"
