Hell yeah, MikeJ you said it all. He got his ASS OWNED. As we say in Relic Gaming, Pwnage in Lacar (In the Face). Good ridden. Yeah now Valve can release the HL2, without the source code flying around. Yeppie. Best damn times, now only we could put a complete stop to this.

Germany (or at least those few Nazis still left) are going to start another World War, only this time, it will be virtual.

Well, I suppose being virtual will depend on if Bush is still president. :P

HERES A BETTER TRANSLATION (Sort of)

            -----------------------------------------------

            Phatbot author caused large damage

One week ago arrested presumed Phatbot Entwicker Axel G. respectively "Ago" was obviously working at full capacity with the programming of the Trojaners. It time for various activities remained, about failures in other of systems. After searches of heise on-line "Ago" was relevant at the spectacular Source code theft the PC play Halflife 2 takes part. Indications for its co-operation are even in publicly accessible Chatlog files.

In September 2003 the code in the InterNet, geklaute by servers of the US-American Halflife manufacturer valve, had been published. Valve has the long expected play until today do not give into the sales. When indicated reason for the fact that the SOURCE code did not only betray the most important bases and software techniques, but also an inadvertent knowledge branch provided for Cheatern, which want to provide advantages opposite other players in such Multiplayer Games. After information of heise on-line numbered US-American determination authorities the developed damage on more than 100 million US dollar.

Also German enterprises consider, demands for payment of damages against Axel G. to formulate. The Karlsruher Provider Schlund&Partner for example victim of a Phatbot test run became: "since at the end of of February we had a strongly growing number of HTTP post office inquiries to our enterprise addresses throat.net and one and one.de determined ", said heise on-line to firm speaker Andreas bricklayer. "these inquiries did not come from a Browser, and their structure referred strongly to the Phatbot/Agobot worm."each Request contained 200 KByte of useless data. Afterwards it turned out that Phatbot in this way determines the InterNet bandwidth of the host, whom he infected with a "speed test in such a way specified".

Throat had rather fast succeeded it to filter the Phatbot Requests. "we would not have gepatcht our Web servers, by the Request alone in March about three Terabyte at detailed data garbage would not have accumulated", so bricklayers. The Provider registered appropriate HTTP inquiries of approximately 750.000 different IP addresses. At least so many PCS are thus infected of the worms Agobot3 or Phatbot already. Virus experts estimate the number of the stricken systems even at well over one million.

Throat did not let it be based on this realization. "Stutzig made us that it was under the IPs a Linux Rootserver gehosteter of us, from which a Windows worm come should", reported bricklayers. "we got permission from the customer concerned for looking at us its computer. There we found the current source text of the Agobot3-Wurms as well as further information, which pointed on the fact that the worm was spread by this system."throat transmitted the collected data finally to the kriminalpolizei and refunded a display approximately unknown. Here`s the translation, please don`t tell me how many errors and typos I did, I know I suck at English

The developer of Phatbot, Axel G. aka "Ago" who was arrested last week, doesn't`t seem to have been working under full capacity with his Trojan alone. There was time for different other activities, like breaking into external / alien systems.

Heise.de investigation found him to be linked to the Source-theft of the PC-Game Half-Life2. Signs for his involvement are to be found in publicly available Chat logs.

In September 03 the source code, which had been stolen from servers of the US-American Half-Life developers Valve, was leaked into the Internet. Up until today Valve has not released the highly anticipated game.

According to Valve, the reason for this is that due to the source-theft not only secrets and basics of software technology were given away, but cheaters would have a unwanted head start.

According to information of Heise Online, American investigators said that the damage amounts to more than a 100.000.000$

Please note: the complete last part is about the problems a German ISP had with PhatBot, which was presumably coded by the very same person that leaked HL2 / HL2 source code. i`m not gonna translate that.

That's a great translation, thanks Tek!

If this is how you "suck" at english, remind me never to play CS against you, even if you "suck" at it.

According to the second article heise.de published, Axel G. has admitted that he created the Agobot/Phatbot trojan (with participation of other german hackers) and even used Sasser to spread the trojan. They report that Axel G. has been released from custody while the investigations are continued, which may result in Axel G. beeing actually charged with his crimes. The police has seized his passport so he can't get away. They do not mention the HL2 source incident anymore; it seems the police/public attourney is not investigating the theft. (Maybe we'll hear of that later....)

Sorry for not giving you a verbatim translation, I don't have the time

Btw, Heise.de is a highly credent news source. Heise itself is a big german publishing house, several very popular computer and IT magazines belong to them.
