they should just call it cs2.
Unless Valve has yet another incarnation of CS in the works. Sure, the CS gameplay is timeless and wonderful, and it will be awesome when ported to the Source engine. But at some point Valve will want to milk the CS cash cow once again (and rightfully so) by releasing a sequel that is fundamentally new and different. I would be surprised if they were already working on it, especially since they're such a small company, not to mention being busy with the impending release of HL2. But I'm sure a true sequel to CS is in the back of the developers' minds as it is with the rest of the community. CS Source will be one step towards modernizing CS, but it certainly won't be the ultimate step. I'm willing to bet that Cliffe's voice saying "Counter-strike Source" at the end of the E3 demo was pointedly meant to differentiate it from CS2. But then again, TF2 is definitely vaporware, so I guess you never can tell what might happen.

      Indeed, TFC2 will never be.

You sure about that? I was at the E3 on Friday, and the guy next to me asked Eric that exact question at the end of the reel. Eric smirked and said something about "being unable to disclose information at this time".

wait, I'm confused, is CS:S just CS on the Hl2 engine cause then if thats the case what the hell is CS2 gonna be and when Hl2 is released why wouldn't they just update all of CS to Source and then just forget the Hl engine

cs should just be upgraded to the hl2 engine for everyone. even if it means people whining that their comps suck too much. that way, everyone will be on the same page. i would surely hate to have to follow two games (cs 1.6 and cs source are different enough to be called completely two different games in my opinion). it would just be confusing.

BTW: IT'S "TF2" as in "Team Fortress Two" and not "Team Fortress Classic Two."

Word on the street is that CS:S will be available for separate purchase concurrent with HL 2's release. It would be cool if the special edition (of HL 2) included CS:S and the other source conversions.
Oh great, so they want us to pay for a game that we have been playing for 5 years even though with HL2 we will be able to play all other mods for free (if you buy the multiplayer version at least).

Actually, now that i read that article again, the "for free" part could refer to the old CS. So the article really says, that for current CS users it won't be for free, no word about futur HL2 owners.

And if they are really crazy stupid enough to charge you for CS-S even though you have bought hl2 that would still leave the question what kind of multiplayer HL2 will have natively.

I cant wait for TF2, and i seriouslly want CS:S (CS1.999999(infitnate)) and i also hope they point the conversions in the platinum/collectors edition, since i am buying 3 copies already

                  1 HL:kmart (single only)

                  1 HL:normal (sp+mp)

                  1 HL:platinum (sp+mp+extras)

better get a friggin t-shirt this time, but then again i already have 5 copies of hl+releated conversions

                  2 HL

                  1 CS

                  1 BS

                  1 OP

1 Genrerations 3 (HL, CS, OP, BS)

                  1 DoD

so i will proberlly pay for CS:s aswell

why would we want to follow cs 1.6 when we have "counter-strike source"?

Why don't they post screenshots of the high resolution 700 MB video of CS Source?

well, people are already complaining about how bad their fps drops in steam, think about their fps drops on the hl2 engine.

O by the way on that ping issue. If anyone has played UT2004, FarCry or Painkiller you would know that the multiplayer engine does have fixes to the ping issues. Yes the ping might be a little different, but I think in due time of testing after a good solid month of getting everything to work correctly, Valve will fix any Ping, Xms issues, and other stuff.
i really really hope valve will find a workaround for ping dependancy on fps this time round. they seem to have failed in HL, even though they have removed most of it.
