    WCG w2z

I spotted this over at ESReality. It looks as if the World Cyber Games USA Qualifiers are going to be huge. They're taking place at Web2Zone in New York, NY. Some of the top names from all over the country are going, and will be competing for a trip to Korea to represent the USA in the WCG.

The list of clans who are going is as follows:
    • 3d (invite)

    • w.e.w (invite)

    • zex (invite)

    • nv (invite)

    • rs (1st tx qual)

    • f^ (2nd tx qual)

    • [e--] (1st ga qual)

    • |nude| (2nd ga qual)

    • rival (1st ca qual)

    • vbn (2nd ca qual)

We are blocking 3 NYC streets off in front of Web2Zone for the Festival. There will be over 50 food/beverage vendors, sponsor booths (including Microsoft and CompUSA) and a HUGE JumboTron truck broadcasting the matches being held inside Web2Zone.

There will be a rock concert by Seven and the Sun . . . Don't miss it!

The World Cyber Games (WCG), the world's largest global video gaming championship, invites America's top gamers to prove their speed, strategy and skill in the WCG 2002 USA Tour National Finals in New York City @ Web2Zone.

Gamers have the chance to compete in up to five exciting games: StarCraft: Brood War, Quake III: Arena, Half-Life: Counter Strike, Unreal Tournament (completed), and Age of Empires II: The Conquerors (completed)

For international fame and fortune of course!

The winners of the U.S. National Finals will win a trip to Daejon, Korea to compete in the International WCG 2002 Championships, taking place on October 28 through November 3, for a share of $300,000 in prize money.

I thought the CPL was the biggest world-wide competition? I've never even heard of this bullshit.

"wcg is another kinda like cpl but not as big"

WCG is very big. The USA Qualifier isnt as big as CPL, but the main WCG event is much larger then CPL can even come close to. The WCG is run just like the olympics, so that is the reason that you dont see 20 teams from the USA competing in it.

They have constructed their own players village where the players live in during the week of the event. They have $300,000+ in cash prizes. They are covered by MANY MANY of TV networks (not just a news story here and there, actually covered, like ESPN covers the NFL. None in the USA though). They have many many major sponsors, like Samsung, Intel, Nike, Coca-Cola, ect.

Here are some pictures from last years WCG event (Next Image link is on the post box below picture):

                      http://www.esreality.com/?a=post&id=4915

This shows things that will leave many people in awe, such as the opening ceremonies, the players village, the media coverage, the actual event itself, and more.

(btw. WCG is held in Korea, not Europe)

Yea, the one place proffesional gaming has really taken off is Korea. They live in their own little world out there. In Korea gaming is just as popular as football or baseball in the US. The biggest pop-stars perform at WCG, it's really quite something. If I could go, I would. They and their sponsors are putting an incredible amount of money into all this. All of the teams get free travel and lodging, food, girls. ^^

I might head out to w2z this weekend to mingle with my fellow gamers. Personally I'm rooting for Forsaken.

I would have loved to see them beat 3D.

Unlike the CPL, who has 2 US events and multiple Euro events a year, the WCG is ran once a year, so only has 1 US qual and 1 main event roll around each year. Because of this, it recieves little to no news site attention untill it rolls around. Also, it has only run 1 event that has features CS in it (last year the the 1st official WCG, with a "WCG Challenge" test event being ran the previous year. Those are the only 2 events to date).

Last years WCG event regaurding CS and the USA was rather screwy. The event ran at the same time as CPL last year, so on the CS side there wasnt a lot of attention as it was focused on CPL (but the other 5 games recieved a lot of attention), especially in the USA. Another reason why the USA's focus was not on the WCG is because we did not have a qualifier, or a legit representative. The WCG USA orginizers (pie.com) didnt do a good job at orgninizing the USA qualifier, and was forced to cut out the CS qual. Instead they (controversally) hand selected a team to represent the USA at WCG. This team didnt even make it to the double elimination bracket (gg).

So anyways, yeah, thats why there hasnt been much reporting of the WCG on this CS based North American news site. Its very popular and known as "THE EVENT" elsewhere though :P

(p.s. WCG does not get reported on DomainOfGames either, as WCG competes with CPL, and Frank Nuccio (CPL Commis) owns DoG. So dont expect to hear about the WCG from the "eSports" site. Try ESReality or ShackES.)

(p.s. again, WCG pics can be found at http://www.esreality.com/?a=post&id=4915 )
