Okay, let me put it like this.

          id software releases Quake III.

Soon we see Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Q3:Team Arena, Alice, Medal of Honor: Alied Assault, etc, etc, etc... you know how long I could go on listing games that are based on Quake III?

Half-Life mods are only different from these games in that they weren't developed by game studios, but rather by independent teams of guys working for fun. Half-Life mods use the code for the Half-Life engine, and then build a game off of it. The difference is that user mods require the original game, where as professional ones don't, because they've bought the license to the technology.

That's the same freaking thing that many other games have done dating back from the doom clones, the quake 1 and quake 2 based games (Half-Life was in part a massive mod of quake, and again, I don't have the time to begin to list all the games that have come off of these engines).

Hell, there's even a bunch of Unreal engine games, and nobody sits around saying that Tom Clancy's Raven Shield (or whatever) is just a ripoff of Unreal Tournament.

I find it funny that people like mouth would think that Team Arena is a fine and good way of making money, when it's the same engine (plus a few minor enhancements to make the game possible) as the original Quake III Arena, and yet seperately releasing CS is not okay?

New engines are great, sure, and we'd all love to see Half-Life 2. But you know, VALVe isn't a company that specializes in making the most cutting edge realistic graphics engines ever. That's what id software does. VALVe has focused on good AI, and good overall gameplay.

When we all get tired of CS, that's when the next major change to VALVe's linup will likely come. Until that point, to be honest I'm completely satisfied with CS as it is. Sure, there's more features I'd like to see, but I love this game more than any other I've played. Somehow I can't be angry with VALVe for being smart enough to recognize that fact.

And to JdeFalconr, thank you for being a decent human being. Seems like thankfulness is a virtue that some people don't seem to have. I used to work in fast food (Subway), and honestly, any time you have to work in a position, you become more thankful to others who do that. All the girls I know who have been waitresses are bigger tippers than just about anyone else, because they've been there, and know they would have appreciated it. So yeah, thanks.

Hope you all remember to take your medication! :-P GJ, Rizzuh, Puffy, Narby, etc... always good to see some intelligence posted, even if the former parties don't quite understand it all, heh heh

Wow, I can't believe people think of me... :*) My life is now complete D:

I don't have any gripes about VALVe selling games. Infact I applaud them for taking the initiative to allow HL to be modded.

I do however question their choices of the ongoing development of CS. I know you think I'm pessimistic, but in reality I'm just realistic. Pun not intended.

Question everything, consider all things, accepting the fact that you'll never know the answers to anything.

Wow. I think a lot of you are completely missing the fact that -4- years after half-life originally came out, the studio is still releasing updates. How many other companies will do that, even a year after the product is out? Forget the length it takes them for a patch, forget about them re-releasing games again, just look at that one simple thing. Most companies will stop with patches after a year, maybe a year and a half for an incredibly popular game, but the half-life engine is still getting constantly patched by valve so all of us can play counter-strike, DoD, and whatever else. Yeah, they're in it for money, which is why they are re-releasing stuff, but just look at how committed they are when they update products at all this long after original release

Why is mouth having a rant about the rereleases? If you bought any version of HL ever, you can play CS, DoD and HL, to name the most popular, for the original price you paid. You don't have to buy every single release of the same game you know... I bought the Generations pack after playing CS with my german exchange partner. I got it for £20, that was 2 years ago (ish). How much have I paid since? Eff all. The game has improved by a long way since then, and you paid nothing for it. Yet you complain. Pffft!

! Mintman farts in Mouth's general direction

Assuming you weren't just mocking his misspelling of "NightHawk", in CS Retail, all the guns are named differently than in the mod version. Styre gets changed to something like "Schmidt" and such, in general just a bunch of really stupid names.

Well, I wasn't aware of any of this, not owning retail, and discovered the alternate names with the CS1.4 steam beta. I was pissed that they were changing all the weapon names when I first saw it. Anyway, looking through the weapon names, trying to figure them out in 1.4, I noticed that the Desert Eagle is called the "NightHawk" in retail.

I was living in the college dorms back then, and was #1 on the college CS server in deagle kills... so I thought the "renaming" of the Desert Eagle was pretty appropriate. :) Only later did I find out that all retail users had those horrible names, and that in the actual CS 1.4 I wouldn't have to endure the renaming. (I actually modified my HL files so that the regular names were back in there during the steam trials, heh.)

So, if you weren't aware of the history, that's what he's talking about. And in case that didn't make it perfectly clear, unlike the other thousands of people using some variation of "NightHawk" as their name, I didn't get mine from the Desert Eagle.

I usually don't reply to threads like this; but I find that some people are missing the point.

Everyone is bitching different things about Valve, the fact is, they support their game more than most companies support.

id software releases point releases to fix bugs; I don't recall ID software ever giving mod-developers the chance at going retail.

id software makes more money off their engine than they do off the game. Face it, Q3A was dead the first two months it came out. People still play it, of course, because it's Quake 3; but the community isn't nearly as big as the HL community.

Half-Life is... how many years old? Let's count. 98, 99, 00, 01, 02, Half-Life will be 5 years old this November. How many games that are 5 years old STILL make money, and STILL gain support from their developers?

You also are bitching about how TF2 and HL2 aren't released yet, but once again you are missing the point. Everything that is being put into the HL engine, is in turn, being developed for the HL2/TF2 engine. IE: All this anti-cheat shit, will be developed, working, (working well) by the time that the new game comes out. Wow... wouldn't it be good to make sure something works before it got released in a retail game? Would it be smart to use your old technology to test the new technology on while still gaining revenue and also pleasing a community? No, of course not.

The fact is, everything that is being developed for HL at the current time, will make it's way into TF2, HL2, and CS2. Half-Life TV advances; Valve Anti-Cheat advances; will all be working when the game comes out. That is 1 less thing that Valve needs to worry about supporting, because they KNOW it works.

Valve is a company, if they don't make revenue, we won't get anymore updates to CS or HL. And we definately won't see HL2 or TF2.

They are not cheating you, you paid your money and are getting 5 years worth of software with a $20 game. Hell, I've seen HL being sold for $10 in some places. 1 piece of software can give you dozens upon dozens of MODs, not including Counter-Strike.

I think we'll be seeing TF2 next year, because with Doom3 and UT2003 recently released/planning to be released, Valve will need to release a game to keep up the competition. CS:CZ isn't that far away, stop your bitching. As soon as this gets released you will be shitting your pants and praising Valve... then three months later you will be bitching again.

Welcome to the life of a Popular Gaming Community. Take some notes Carmack.
