Yes, most viruses are spread through Outlook Express, rather than MSN Messenger, though the percentage going through the latter is certainly increasing. MSN Messenger is totally evil, though. Basically, in WinXP, you have to set up a security preference that never allows it to run if you don't want it randomly loading when you open Outlook Express or visit hotmail or randomly at other times. I use Trillian for my messaging, as it supports IRC, ICQ, AIM, MSN, and YIM all in the same program. Nifty eh? But kind of off the point here...



The real problem is that most computer users are both dumb and trusting, so they'll run files they get from their friends, not realizing that a virus on their friend's computer could have sent it for them.



And yes, this was posted earlier as being associated to a ******. In my experience, most viruses are spread either through email, messaging clients, or warez/hacks. The first two rely on the stupidity of the user, and the third largely does too (though the stupidity is in downloading illegal software from some random person and not expecting any sort of viruses).



I've never been infected by a virus, and I don't even use antivirus software on any sort of regular basis. If I'm downloading something very questionable, I'll grab an a/v client and scan it quick. If I get a program sent to me over email, I write back asking them if they really intended to send me that file before I'll attempt running it. A little caution goes a loooong way in protecting yourself against viruses.



Kind of funny that it steals cd-keys... not very surprising though, I suppose.

What happens is people have me on their e-mail addy book, so the virii THEY get, send themselves to me. Got to the point that I stopped using MSOE, and moved to a more secure e-mail client.



Newest A/V w/ updated Vir Defantions don't bother either.

I am pretty tight about virii, after I got the Fun Love virus, which adds a few bytes of data to every .exe, .dll, and .com files, and thus can make version checks (eg, for CS) fail, which don't allow a player to play online.



Doh, that ended my CS career, at the peak of my skill.

I have been using computers now since 1989 and not once in that time have I been infected with a virus. I've been in the habit over the year's of virus scanning programs I downloaded, files that get copied from floppy disk's or in the modern world of today, CD-R's/CD-RW'S/CD's, both in DOS in the 90's and even from Windows 3.1x days.



Also anything that was to be installed from floppy's or CD's is scanned as well.



There HAVE been cases in the past with program distributions having a virus in there. There's been cases too over the years of "free demo cd's" from various magazines having viruses too.



I also DONT use Microsoft Outlook (even thought I have Outlook 2000 with my Office Package) but rather a free email program called Pegasus Mail that doesn't have a billion security flaws and holes in it.



Finally, if you are going to use a filesharing or P2P program, consider looking into WINMX. Unlike Kazaa and it's network, you wont find in WINMX...



A) Viruses roaming the WINMX P2P network like it does on Kazaa. These Kazaa specific viruses roam all over that network infecting people at random. Mind you actual files on ANY P2P/FS network could be infected, but then that's why we scan downloads dont we?



B) Spyware



C) Built in Trojans designed to watch your usage and potentially use up bandwidth and CPU cycles



D) Ad's



E) Stupid AOL users that flock to Kazaa and think it's l337. :)



In short I don't feel sorry for people with trusting AOL mentality that will d/l a file in MSN Messenger without thinking and running it.



And speaking of tracking I just noticed bottom of this page CS Nation is using a "Web Bug" to track usage here it seem's. Proxomitron/JD5000 filtered it out and shows a "ladybug" image. :) This webbug lead's to

Oh yeah btw previous versions of winmx allowed people to access your entire computer if you had shared files on they fixed that awhile ago though. Also winmx blows i go on it i have about 14 uploads start up and then when i try to get some files i'm put on a 200 list que or some other nonsense. Use Kazaa lite its gets most of that ugly garbage off of it.

Negative. The really bad ones come from email. IE: Klez and BugBear the two most destructive ones still out there.



Others originate from file sharing programs like BearShare, Morphius, etc.

Um, let me just put this to rest right now. I work for Symantec. So on this issue, Lethal is right that more viruses spread through MS Outlook. But what is incorrect here is this. If you have Norton AntiVirus 2000 or earlier, then you can get a virus by viewing the message. However, if your not a moron you have already upgraded to Norton AntiVirus 2001 or higher because we have incorporated our Scriptblocking technology that will block any email containing malicious code.



More importantly, if you keep your antivirus software up to date and perform full system scans once a week your chances of getting a virus are slim to none. In Norton AntiVirus' case if you start to download a program that is a virus and we know about it and you have updated virus definitions then our Auto-Protect feature will catch it before anything is done. All of this sounds good unless your infected by Klez or BugBear, because they target AntiVirus software and disable it or your ability to install it on your system. In other words, your screwed and you have to get it removed manually.



Just for everyone's information. You will not receive these email attachments if you use a web based email client such as Hotmail or Yahoo. Norton is a great virus scanner, but i used to have one by the name of Inoculate ITPE or something (they binded with e-trust and now thier virus scanner isn't free anymore) and it would catch everything norton didn't, it was awesome :-pl Also, a good free virus scanner is AVG, www.grisoft.com

Imho best 100% free is F-Prot (DOS version of F-Secure, works in all OS' though). Get it from logical address www.f-prot.com

If you're ready to buy a virus scanner, buy either Norton or F-Secure. They are both equally good and they don't have too tight-assed "security" algorithms that won't let you install everything you want. (yes, some scanners do that).



...or you can always use Linux.
