Man all this no community stuff is really disheartening. I like the idea of community, not just cs but everything.

There's something really wrong, imho with ones world view if you dont see everyone as being in a global community and miriads of subdivisions of coimmunity within.Im no hippy, but I think it makes for a better world that way. Within any community you get differing levels of participation. My two penneth.

Anyhoo on the admins and map rotation issue. Our clanserver nearly always ran custom maps, and we would encourage others on public servers to come and playtest our clan maps, or just mail em to selected clanmates and associates. We lost our server a few weeks ago (god it seems like years now..), and our clan leader (1mb connection guy) has got a new job and hasnt got a replacement machine. Im all for hiring one but you try convincing stoners to be proactive about stuff. About the drop off in players on a map change is that we didnt really care. None of the commercially popular maps were played to any degree, (cept when we prepped for our ritual sodomisation and buggery at the Red November tourney). We always had a good ten or so players on.

Just recently Ive started joinng servers with one or two players on, just to try it out, and ive found that within ten minutes you see the players spiral to almost too full to be comfy and crappy pings ensue.

I've also found that there are at least fifty percent (made up statstic) of people on a server, yes even those 24/7 Dust ones, who know what theyre doing and are quite willing to work as a team, sure they might not voice comm, but they do try and communicate a bit.

Oh yeah, My PLEA to the community, PLEASE PLEASE CAN more people give location of where the bomb is down??? Primary importance me thinks, yet hardly anyone does it! (pet Hate)

Anyhoo I have rambled for far to long, Peace out Gnite!

I disagree with 1.5 being best for league play...1.3 baby. The matches were just so much more exciting (jumping) and fast...and the hitboxes didn't allow bullets to randomly headshot.

Well, hope I didn't come off as a "I played since beta one, bow down" person, just some thoughts.
It didn't come off like that at all.. I agree totally. I started playing about beta 6.5. I remember that the first time I played as_tundra I asked what the map was, and I had about 5 or 6 people telling me and helping me the whole time. Not too likely you'd see that happen anymore.

I always try to be nice to newbies who really are new and who are just trying to learn to play (since I'm so l337).

As far as the whole community issue goes, CSN ate my post. So, I'll go ahead and summarize my thoughts briefly, and by briefly, I mean slightly shorter than a doctorate thesis.

First off, I think people forget that CS is played over the internet. The internet in general is filled with all sorts of people, and some of those people use it to make complete asses of themselves. This is true of virtually any online community. However, because CS has become popular among people of a rather young age group as well as older people, you have a lot higher rate of obnoxious people.

Take Natura Selection for example. I've been having the "beta days" feeling with that, seeing the same people in servers multiple times, which gives you a feeling of a smaller, more personal community. However, it's quickly expanding, and I can't expect it to last really, especially as a flood of CS players try it out.

I think we all glorify "back in the day" of our CS experience, whether that was an early beta or only a few version numbers back. Maps were scary and sometimes confusing, but always exciting as we learned the various spots and tactics involved. Who can't remember thinking "wow, an automatic sniper rifle, I'm saving up for one!" or grabbing up your shining dual elites for the first time? It was fun, it was different, and we were new.

Now we know which weapons to use to kill most effeciently, and strategy has been reduced to subconscious memory of positions and approaches based on hundreds or thousands of rounds played on any given map. Servers have tailored to the most popular maps (I still miss the assassination-only and other themed servers), and we're starting to realize that we've done the same thing a million times now. Even returning CS to the beta versions, with the community that was once there, wouldn't ultimately change that.

On the bright side, the huge CS community has some definite advantages. With as many people as there are, it's exposed some definite and rare tallent. Take some of the modelers who create beautiful guns for us to play with, for instance. CS fans have created programs for all the HL mods, ranging from adminmod to statsme to HLG. The CS community isn't always the nicest or the closest community, but there definitely some cool things about it.

My $49.97 on the subject, anyway.

Er, I just realized we're discussing CAL-m here. So... go Ascension! Pacific Coast all the way! :) Hopefully they'll all add a good new dynamic to CAL-i, and give the vetrans a run for their money.

Very true. If a public server based clan goes out looking for a new member, they don't go "Omg that guy defused the bomb, let's recruit him." No, they say "Omg that guy killed 7 guys with his AK in one round, lets recruit him."

As far as whining about how there's no teamwork in public servers, maybe you people have failed to realize that they're.. PUBLIC SERVERS. I play on pubs rarely, but when I get tired of matches and scrimming CAL-m and CAL-i clans day after day, I go to a public server. I don't go there with the intent of helping my team, or defusing/planting the bomb when I can simply win by killing the other team.. which in my opinion is more fun. When serious players with teams in higher-end leagues go to a pub, they do it for a quick few minutes of fun (before faggots ban them because "they wallhack omg").

To them and myself, public servers are filled with players very easy to take down.. and I don't need much help from my team to take out 10 average pubbers. So no, I will not come into a pub server and go defuse an unguarded bomb when I can kill 5 guys just as easily.

The hitboxes weren't changed that drastically. Their positions were just moved and others made larger. You can't have a random headshot.. you can have a random bullet hit a head hitbox, but you cant have an on-target bullet randomly headshot you.

Yet still.. you complain about "random headshots", probably because they are unrealistic, though you like being able to jump around endlessly and shoot people in the head while doing so.

                Interesting.

i disagree with there being no cs community. Maybe not everyone who plays cs is part of a community, but i think they are out there. The only league the clan i am in plays in is STA right now. This league is full of mature, and respectful clans. No noob bullshit, just good times. Most of the clans in the alpha division have been around for awhile, and when a new clan comes they are embraced by all. Clans get to know eachother very well, and i would say there is a very strong STA community. Although the talent level may not be cal-i, or maybe even cal-m with all the clans, it is still the best and must fun league i have ever been a part of. I think that is because of the community that is created, in conjunction with www.teamgamer.com. Its just wonderful.

[Edit: Cars are not related in any way to CAL-m, even distantly.]

Lastly, I'd say the best league gaming came from 1.0 and 1.1. All they needed were correct hitboxes and those versions would of been a ton better. 1.4/5 is just so boring and slow these days and is dominated by even fewer guns. Also, the maps seem to be getting more laggier and more "artistically" made than gameplay.

Have you noticed that there are hardley a change in league maps for that very reason?

nuke, dust2, prodigy, inferno, train, aztec

Are all played because of gameplay. Not because they are pretty.

Also, the "CS community" as we call it has changed focus from when it first started. It is now driven by eSports and CPL/CAL more than anything. Pubs are no longer the way they used to be because those people that made pubs good are now either in league play and don't bother with pubs anymore cause they suck, or have quit the game entirely.

IMO, pubs suck. Nothing like getting killed from behind because your teamate is hiding behind some box hoping that someone will come by that isn't wall hackin' so they can kill them.

Mine, too. Pubs are where new players go to learn, but people are so retarded there that public servers would actually seem harmful to a noob's learning experience.

Yes pubs are terrible in every way, from anti camper scripts to 3 minute round timers (3 minutes is not enough time on cs_maps) to no freeze time. I hate pubs. And that's just the server itself, don't get me started on the players.
