The servers I use to play at ran a full rotation on a 25 minute timer. I think like 1 out of every 200 servers does that now days, and it doesn't matter because people just vote back to dust with the admin mod bullshit.

I've watched the CAL-i demos a lot. It taught me 1 thing. How amazing my clan is, managing to botch every strat CAL-i players use :)
BTW, does anyone else study demos to try to suck less? :)MikeJ wrote..

agreed, but more and more servers these days lose out to player dropoffs after changing to certain less-familar maps. and while it's no excuse, I'd think I'd rather play on a full aztec server than to lose more than half the players changing to a map like clan_mill either because they don't have the file in the first place, or because they dont want to take the time to learn it.Comment

Yea like I'm saying, server admins run what brings players, which brings me back to "community is ass" argument, because in the end the community decides which maps get the most play time. I think back in the betas, at least in my personal experience, counter-strike was more about adapting to new environments and situations, and learning new play styles and tactics with each map change. It wasn't all compressed into a 4 map rotation with a single formula for game play, it seemed must more dynamic and interesting. I think that's what originally drew a lot of people to the game, but then it was embraced by the masses and turned in to the cyber sport(good)/brain dead kill fest (bad) it is today. Not that the beta community, or game itself, was perfect.Comment

Agreed. Then again, there are other maps that are standard in the CS install/upgrade that no one ever plays. Isn't estate, backalley, nuke, etc still a part of the standard CS install/upgrade? I wouldn't want to play these maps all the time, but every now and then you get a craving for maps like as_highrise.

Then, after playing it for 25 minutes, you realize why you don't play those maps :)Comment

Mike, I think part of it is also the players and their styles. Remember, back in the beta days, these are the people who wanted to learn this new game. A new map or weapon comes out, and everyone wants to try it. Since CS has been out for years, the people who have started playing CS in the past year or so have been those who caught the retail flooding of CS. These aren't your typical gamers who just want to try new stuff. They are the ones who see a map that gets played a lot, and they stick to it, not really wanting to learn about the other maps and playstyles.

You talk to an CS old-timer and they a new map comes out (or a new weapon) and they're the first ones to say "let's play this map!" then judge whether they like it or not. The new folks playing CS see the new map and go "I don't want to play this crap, I don't know it".
Nothing wrong with it, it's just two types of people.Comment

Three things:
1. The 5.2 and even the 6.1 communities were great. No "You cheat you fucker, you weren't even looking at me" or servers full of people who have no idea what they are doing. I remember actually running into teh same people on 5.2 servers amny times. We would have conversations when we were dead, work as a team and actually try and do the objective, and once in a while just mess around. You really can't do that too much anymore, I miss the good times.
2. I haven't seen a cs_siege 24/7 Server in ages, I used to love that map.
3. as_highrise was great. I remember killing 9 people, including the VIP, with the mac 10 one time. I was in that room near teh T spawn you had to climb a rope to get up to. Good map overall, too bad assasination maps are so few and far between now days.
Well, hope I didn't come off as a "I played since beta one, bow down" person, just some thoughts.Comment

I miss the beta's so much. there's not a day goes by that I don't wish for those days to come back. Later of course I realize that if CS was still like the old beta days most likely we would have a much smaller CS player base due to people getting sick of the game and stop playing it. But a man can dream right?
beta 6.1 = best version evar!!

i remember as_highrise having a lot more publicity back even around the 7.1-1.1 versions too.. wasn't until around 1.3 to now that they really started dissapearing. its basically because people are trying (and, imo, succeeding) in making this into a deathmatch game by playing dust/aztec "fragfests" which is causing people at valve to restrict people in what they do and how certain maps are played... i still think a second scoreboard which was based on how many hosties rescued/bombs planted/bombs defused would benefit the game and cut back on the 'omg ur geh newbie go away while i awp the whole other team and break my 7:1 ratio kthxbai' mentalityComment

despite the fact that i bought my copy of retail about 4 weeks before 1.4, this is correct

if people are going to harp on their individual score, it would be nice if it indicated, in some way, that they were trying to complete objectives
and "team score" doesnt count for shitComment
