Because, at the time, it was the greatest engine to develop on and recieved the greatest amount of developer support. It's only recently other developers have started offering as much support as Valve did and still do!
Plus, Half-Life had plenty of material in it already suitable for CS (real-world-ish textures and mdoels), whereas Q3A and UT didn't - they were all sci-fi gone mad.
HL is generally better suited and better equipped for CS than Q3A or UT were at the time. UT or Q3A could have done CS, but the effort required would have been far greater early on.Comment

Didn't Rage make Gunman Chronicals for VALVe? :)

There's Urban Terror for Q3A, which in many ways is prettier than CS (duh, Quake 3 based), but not as fun overall.
I guess I'm not a picky guy overall when it comes to graphics. For me, "pretty graphics" was the feeling I got when I bumped up to anisotropic texture filtering in Half-Life instead of trilinear. :) I like to run hi-res, with very smooth frame rates. Half-Life lets you do this very nicely on a GeForce of any type with a mediocre processor. Works for me.
As far as the "3D maps" idea goes, as_oilrig is king in my opinion. Macman really has contributed to quite a few maps in the texture department of things.Comment

Looks great, but they had texture artists and resources to start with. CS didn't - it just had a coder, a PR guy, couple of mappers... Of course, if Goose wanted to use Q3A or UT he could have, but it made more sense to use a game with the correct features and existing textures/models than have to make all them too!

i totally agree, predator is an excellent map. with small teams, it can prove to be a real challenge. the tree climbing, traps, the tripwires, underground shafts, water etc etc. excellent map; i wish people would stay when i rcon it on my server, heh. survivor is also an very fun map, much better then most of the de_ maps.
3d mikes maps are great. survivor, predator, and greenhouse are all really fun, tactical, and pretty maps. i dont know why people dont like them.
predator was his boldest move in this direction, with an entrance to both sites from underneath. however, he felt like no one was ready for it (because so many people complained) and he went off to make maps for a different engine after survivor.Comment

David Johnston, ut and q3 did not come out untell about b4 or so anyway so that realy was not an option. however when q3 did come out the first thing i said was that id software would be fools not to bring on Goosman and a few others from the crew like yourself to port cs to the q3 engine. however instead now they have raven working on q4, so they are obviously fools.
as for 3D-Mike, i have not seen one map of his that i felt played well. prety yes, good gameplay no. preditor was the closest but it still fails to come close to the beter maps out there.
torn is a great map if people play tacticaly instead of runing around like madmen on killing sprees. the bombsites are no farther apart than they ar in dust, the probelm is cts run all the way to the t spawn looking for kills and then the bomb gets planted and no one has time to find it.Comment

show the guy some respect! how many people put the attention to detail in their maps that he puts into his? all for free, and all for your enjoyment (and mine)
disclaimer: my name is in the credits for de_survivor (as [ORD]joe)
i'd like to see any of you talking shit make a map that is anywhere near as good as Mike's.

I think this map looks great. I think survivor was a great map that let strategy win over reflexes or deathmatch tactics. I can't judge greenhouse in the same light yet since I haven't played it. But I think his maps generally are of a higher caliber than other maps included in cs.Comment

Okay, you're stupid. I really hate poeple like you. People have the right to voice their opinions. 3D_Mike makes maps. Criticism is going to come with each and every map he makes, wether it be bad or good. HE makes the maps. HE does. We are the people who PLAY them, therefore we shouldn't have to "create a near as good as his" in order to not like his maps
