I think too many people think that just because a map could never be well tuned and bland enough for league play, it has no place in counter-strike. This kind of thinking makes public servers boring as hell. My only complaint about 3d mike is he doesn't seem to understand anything about bombsite placement. On torn they are way too far about to even think about defusing if you don't know exactly which site it is planted at, and on survivor he puts both bombsites in an enclosed space (truck, plane) which is incredibly ridiculous adding on 5+ seconds to actually getting to and defusing the bomb once you finally reach the sites. Other than that I don't mind a change from the dust 24/7 nonsense.

making "good looking" maps in cs is sooo useless since theres many much better game engines out.
its all about game play at this point
after playing ut2003 then coming back to cs (b/c cs is better)
i look at cs maps including this one and... *barf*
its not worth it to think of new ways to make ugly treesComment

I don't think there's such a thing as a bad map, if a room with 4 blocks and a scout can become more popular than official maps it's a pretty clear sign the less ``tactical'' (I use that term more loosely than rizzuh's jogging shorts) maps will not be played as much as the more simpler linear ones. Being ``good'' or not is relative to the person playing it. Sadly, CS has more deathmatchers than tactitions so those maps that embrace the deathmatch style more tend to be more popular.
It's clear noone likes to have to learn more complex maps and as i've mentioned before, the safety factor is a big part of the maps popularity. Maps with more ``unsafe'' areas are usually lower in the popularity scale.Comment

I must be losing my mind. I swore 3dmike made de_torn. At any rate he sure was the only person defending the map in the comment pages a while ago.Torn - Bomb/Defuse

Well I think CS needs a "pointer" on the radar, that would show where to go to both bombsites or hostages (it would be some kind of symbol or something on the radar). I too play UT2K3, and learning the maps is so much easier by following the pointer than just wondering around looking for the flag or the ball. I think CS in general would benefit from something like that, and then more people wouldn't be so lazy as to learning new maps because it would be easier. But that will never happen :-pComment

3d mikes maps are great. survivor, predator, and greenhouse are all really fun, tactical, and pretty maps. i dont know why people dont like them.
i am beta-testing greenhouse on my server, and it's a lot of fun.
if other people don't like his maps, i can only think it's because you didn't adequately review them. the reason he calls himself "3D" mike is because he tries to use the third dimension (the vertical axis) in his maps. predator was his boldest move in this direction, with an entrance to both sites from underneath. however, he felt like no one was ready for it (because so many people complained) and he went off to make maps for a different engine after survivor. we are lucky that he has used his talents to make one more CS map for us.
show the guy some respect! how many people put the attention to detail in their maps that he puts into his? all for free, and all for your enjoyment (and mine)
disclaimer: my name is in the credits for de_survivor (as [ORD]joe)Comment
