POD-Bot Source Code Revealed

Count Floyd has released the source code for POD-Bot to the delight of POD-Bot fans everywhere. In an entry on his website, Count Floyd lets spill that the driving reason behind open sourcing what is perhaps the best Half-Life bot ever program ever made is his desire to develop a newer bot program that will allow him to "start from scratch again to be able to try out new things which I probably couldn't have done within the hardcoded, limited environment of the existing Bot." Whew, long sentence.



At any rate, if you wish to tinker with the POD-Bot source or just want to take a look at it, you can download it from here. We'll keep you posted on Count Floyd's success with his new bot program when we know more. For more info on the bot, check out the CS-Nation review.

I am a coder myself, and while I think opening the source is a Good Thing™, but one of the golden rules is to not start from scratch. Of course it could still not work (the example, mozilla, worked after 4 years), but read the article and you'll see why you shouldn't.

Simplex, that article doesn't really hold true to something like a bot for CS. It does for something really complex like MS Word or IE, but not a bot for CS.

I think the realistic chat code alone will be worth a look at...I once played in a server for about 20 minutes before I realized one guy was a POD bot (hey, I thought his ping was good because he was on a LAN!)
