agreed, its going to end up with a few 'popular' (read: the maps newbies enjoy) maps and of course the in house made maps like chateau, piranesi, havana. piranesi is made by a guy who works for valve now, so i doubt it will be cut. if any of u played the original quake, you might recognise the piranesi mapper's name. hes made some amazing quake1 maps.
They cut vegas? I didn't think there was anything wrong with that map.
If they're gonna cut Vegas where does it stop?
Next its torn, then storm, oilrig, piranesi.......
Before you know it theres no maps left!appended @ [time="1066692242"]Thortok2000 wrote..
a lot of people say that the 'map doesnt play well' because they cant be bothered to learn the layout. when i first played piranesi i thought, omg, i have no idea where im going. but as soon as u get a mental picture of the map layout in your mind, it becomes so much fun to play.
Nobody's ever said what exactly is wrong with piranesi...is it just the size, or the complexity?
people always say dust is a balanced map 'that flows well' and thats why its popular. but all the time ive spent playing it, it has to be one of the most unbalanced map of all time. as soon as the CTs get colts/awms thats it, the Ts are finished.
with maps like piranesi, its complex layout and multiple routes enable a team to split up and not go down 1 hallway covered by snipers. or maybe people dont like piranesi because it actually involves 2 elements in the game: close quarters as well as having a few very open outdoor areas.
as barny (the guy who made your beloved aztec) once said: "a map where a player doesnt feel safe isnt a very good map". yes, in piranesi ur always thinking if the enemy is round the corner or not, giives the map an 'intelligence' factor of some sort. ie. a map for players willing to use intelligence to outwit a player, rather than being surrounded by 3 walls all the time where they can sit back and gun down any1 that happens to run past their crosshair.
simple maps, for simple people.appended @ [time="1066692764"]MikeJ wrote..
lol? comparing cobble to piranesi.
it's not necessarily the size. the map is layed out like someone took cobble and exploded it, it really doesn't seem to have any sort of flow.
look at dust: every time i play that map, it plays the same! pretty much, round after round after round after round...
mind you, i prefer cobble ANY DAY to dust. since the more choke points a map has, the more variation to gameplay it has. im sure u can figure out the logic in that. right? (not trying to be patronising).
dust has extremely monotonous gameplay. every round is basically the same. same rush, same awm sniper nests, players hiding in same positions round after round.
piranesi on the other hand, has TONNES of chokepoints, and mini chokepoints, making every round completely different.
i know narby plays it safe by having max 3 chokepoints per map, but adding an extra 'danger' factor to a map makes it a better challenge, imo. and wasnt it the 'challenge' CS gave newbies that kept people hooked on the game? (well, im not sure how easy it is for newbies now, but in the betas, i was lucky to kill anything in a round.)Comment

What about the players who play leagues? I cant stand dust and aztec is low on my list, the new maps may be fun for pubs but they play fucking awful for leagues.

Maybe you suck? :\ Sorry but either team can easily win on dust depending on how good your team is.yes, in piranesi ur always thinking if the enemy is round the corner or not, giives the map an 'intelligence' factor of some sort. ie. a map for players willing to use intelligence to outwit a player, rather than being surrounded by 3 walls all the time where they can sit back and gun down any1 that happens to run past their crosshair.
Do you realize how much sheer lack of intelligence pub only players have about the game? Not all of them, but a good amount. And when did I-wonder-if-theres-a-guy-around-this-corner become a standard for an "intelligent" map? That's more of a 'I-wonder-if-theres-a-camping-idiot-with-an-mp5-ar
ound-this-corner-cause-public-scores-sure-do-matter' map.lol? comparing cobble to piranesi.
I agree that'd I prefer cbble to dust, but every map plays pretty much the same if you play with the same people. It's not that difficult to go into a dust server, join the losing team and kill 10+ idiot pubbers who can't find the walk key. Not to brag, but dust plays the same for me every time too: I join, buy a deagle or rifle if I have the money, play slightly smart and kill atleast 5 people if theres 10 on their team.

And it also makes it more likely for you to be killed by someone that is terrible at the game, simply because you can't watch 3 directions at once. Granted you rarely find people walking in pubs but I'd rather be killed by being outskilled, or by me goofing up than be killed simply because I cant be everywhere at once.and wasnt it the 'challenge' CS gave newbies that kept people hooked on the game?
CS must have been your first game.Comment

i like cobble.
also piranesi, regardless of what it's trying to be in terms of breaking out of CS tradition, just bores me. But I'm not 2 dimensional when it comes to map design, i'm probably the only person in the world that would love to see a new league or CAL division that only plays custom maps, a new one every week or something, but i just don't see anything happening in piranesi.Comment

I think all this talk of piranesi is an evil plot to get more people to play that map >
Actually I think it is a cool map - I've been playing it off and on since it came out and I still find new passages and better strats to use. But to be honest about half of those could go cause unless you're playing on a server (like someone else said) with 32 peeps there's no way in hell you'll find the 'other guy' if you've only got 8 people.
Also the bombsites should be a little closer together to allow CT's a better chance to defuse - right now it's 50/50 chance that you pick the right one and if you don't you'll rarely get to the other site in time to kill the anyone that's there and defuse. IMO, it will never take off as a popular map because:
1. People get lost easily cause of all the side passages and turnarounds.
2. The timer can possibly run out before the objectives are accomplished.
3. For teams of 5 it's way too big.Comment
this is my ranking if anyone cares...
