Exo recently had a chance to talk with torbull and bds about the CPL and their great CS clans. Torbull and bds are the managers of Team 3D and Schroet Kommando, respectively. Those teams placed 1st and 3rd at the past winter CPL.
CS-Nation: Sponsors are becoming a large influence on the professional Counter-Strike scene. In your opinion will the future hold sponsors for middle-class clans, and an even bigger share in the life-styles of professionals? It's interesting to see their opposing viewpoints, and what they have to say about the CPL's progress and turn out. Have a ball!
Torbull: I think we are going to see a big change in the CS scene soon. One that will bring the sport to new levels of professionalism, but it is ultimately in the hands of each team to create and sell an image. The more stable CS teams become, the more enticing it is to sponsors to invest some money in a team. Initially, like in any sport, the big name teams will get the sponsors, but as the sport gains popularity and momentum it will eventually trickle down to other top level, mature players.
bds: Definately. I think and hope the "pro" gaming will be just like any other sport. We in SK have signed three players for one year, which includes salary for example. Everything is getting more serious. In the beginning you aimed for hardware sponsorships, now most sponsorships are money based. And with more money based sponsorships more middle-class clans can get hardware sponsorships. The salary right now is actually good enough for the players to play full-time.
