All to often when the shit hits the fan people want to point a finger at a single source. That of course, is not the problem. What about those 2 boys in Jonesborough, Ak. They never played CS, Doom, Quake, or any other "violent" FPS, yet they still seemed to enjoy killing. They blame it on Tom and Jerry.
Columbine. Those fucktard fuckups were Doom fans... Doom 1... come on... you cant tell me you actually believe 16 pixels (give or take..) represent a human. Eithey way, they blame it on the game companies, and very very little on the parents.
In all honesty, I believe most of the anger comes from their peers. People of their own age group.... But NO! God forbid your precious son or daughter is responsible for fucking up someone ELSES life by YEARS of torment, mental and/or physical abuse, etc. It would NEVER be your kids fault. Your family is perfect in every way shape and form!
That of course would be another easy way out.
In all situations where teen violence occurs there is one thing in common: Nothing.
You cannot compare these crimes and blame them all on one thing. These days, the crimes are being commited, not by Joe Nerd, but by Joe Jock as well. And now it seems to gain national [US] and internation attention because it is happening in your middle class neighberhoods.
In review; youth violence is a caused by millions of variables, and in some cases, the same variables seem to be present. It is because of this, TV / Movies, Games, Music, and the Parents are blamed, as they seem to be the common variables.
Of course, closed minded and otherwise moronic congressmen, clergymen, kings, queens, and everyone else with some sort of power, want to take the easy way out by pointing the finger.
Most of you people here seem to have a common belief; Government censorship is bullshit.

i dont think that games and movies, however violent and/or offensive will be banned here in the states and here's why:
if you ask any person between the ages of 10 and 25, maybe 30, people who have grown up with video games, none of them would agree with a ban on gaming. it's the older people who are scared by gaming and technology in general who want the ban. give it 10 or 20 years, when all of the people who grew up playing games start to go into politics. i bet there will even be a lessening of the political correctness standard that we see today. i sure dont know any teenager who tries to politically correct, let alone ban something they've grown up with.Comment

Aragorn - Just for amusement, we will go into the US of A's war record this century.
WW1 - The US didn't involve itself until 1916 (after more than two years of the war had passed and millions had died) and the most bloody and ferocious conflicts had largely passed. The US mainly helped end the stalemate and end the war. Actually, this is probably the war that the US has shown the most prudence in in the entire century. The US didn't want to involve itself in Europe's problems at all, and didn't get involved until the Germans sunk a US ship.
WW2 - Again, the US stayed neutral until Hitler had taken over all of Europe, again having taken a pacifist approach until Pearl Harbour. Good for them I guess?
Korea - The first sign of trouble for the US in war. The US reason for getting involved in this war was rampant anti-communism led by the infamous senator Joe McCarthy. Lots of casualties, which ended anyways in an armistice dividing Korea into two sides. Not really a noble effort as you seem to think.
Vietnam - Although their efforts were noble, the US war in Vietnam was doomed to failure it seems. The US was actually initially dragged into the war by France, who wanted to reclaim their colony after ww2 when Japan had liberated Vietnam from the colonial French (kind of ironic really) The other main reason for the war was of course the continued anti-communism. However, the US record of atrocities in Vietnam isn't exactly admirable. Brutal secret government programs (such as the CIA's Phoenix program which killed thousands of supposed Vietcong spies), carpet bombing of both napalm and herbicides such as agent orange killing hundreds of thousands of acres of forest, land mining, backstabbing and betrayal of the south vietnam government and endorsement of several coups on the regime, killing of many innocent civilians which turned much of the populace which might have supported the US, 600000 Vietcong casualties (as well as 60000 Americans) etc etc. The most despicable American war. The Vietnam war was propagated by politics, rampant anti-communism and even insanity (in the case of Nixon)
You forgot to mention a couple of wars. How about the Cold War? The war that lasted over 40 years, at which any time the world could have ended in nuclear armageddic destruction had Russia or the US been any more careless or stupid. The world was that close to the brink of destruction on several occasions and the US is just as much to blame as the crazy USSR. (maybe)
The Gulf War. The US was defending Kuwait from Iraqi invasion, fair enough. Plus they wanted to test out all their toys and their latest military gadgets.
However, the US record is a lot more despicable when it comes to wars they weren't actually involved in. Things like organizing coups and assassinations against governments and leaders, giving arms and training to military dictators to fight their enemies (often the USSR), etc etc And that is just one aspect of the reason the US is hated around the world.
The other, like you mention, is the huge poverty gap. I think the US puts like 0.1 of its GDP towards foreign aid. Meanwhile, they put hundreds of billions of dollars per year to finance their military infrastructure. Seems kind of disproportionate doesn't it? Nobody is asking you to give up your "Burgers, games, stock market, luxeries, etc. etc." And for sure the US is not the only one to blame. But while over a billion people are starving and dying around the world, the US is putting its money where? Building machines and weapons that can kill people more easily? Militarizing space? Exploiting poor countries? It all seems a bit selfish no?
Brutus - I have heard about movies getting banned in the US, but I read it in the middle of the Z section of some newspaper in a little corner. The reason you haven't heard of it is because it sure doesn't get much media coverage, but I assure you movies get banned in the US (and other countries too.)
edit - And Solace just mentioned A Clockwork Orange was banned in England, which I obviously forgot. That is a more notorious example of films having been banned.
And maybe Al Gore is a conservative fundamentalist asshole. It just seems he couldn't be more so than George Bush.Comment

Xep - How do we address the root of the terrorism problem? I'm no expert nor intellectual, so I couldn't say, but I can make some suggestions. If it were a clearcut solution, it would have been implemented (probably) by now. However, one is to stop making war, ie don't invade Iraq...again. Two might be to really increase foreign aid in the form of food and money. This is sometimes really hard to do because often corrupt government leaders pocket the money or spend on the military which is attacking their own people etc. And the US recently pledged a large load of grain to some African country, but they rejected it because it was genetically modified and they feared it would take over their natural agriculture and they wouldn't be able to trade with the EU. But although these are large obstacles, nothing will get done without trying. Three would be to increase relief efforts to third-world countries in the form of engineers and doctors to provide basic infrastructure and health care. So many people die every day of basic diseases which are easily curable, or having no food or clean water. It is a shame and an atrocity, and it is no surprise when they are pissed off when we, as first-world nations, barely help them and exploit their poverty while we sit on our comparative fortunes.
As for computer games, you said something happened last week to Rizzuh because of the American militia thingy. What happened exactly? I don't keep track.
I guess you are right about the ESRB sort-of protecting the game industry, but it's the age limits that are kind of ridiculous: ie an "M" rating is 18+ right? Yet you can drive at 16. If you are responsible enough to drive, shouldn't you be responsible enough to play video games? I think the definition of "minor" is a bit too broad due to our over-protective conservative society.
