This is an atrocity, they wont stop me from gaming, they cant stop a whole nation of kids either, I thought Greece was a democracy, not a nation of goddam fascists. Tekniques - I'm just saying, don't be surprised to be seeing a law banning so-called "ultra-violent" video games in the very near-future. Yes it may be illegal but it's not like the government can't hire the best lawyers in the country and dismiss everyone else as ultra left-wing liberal pot-smoking anarchists. George Dubya does hail from Texas after all, and he's got the conservative right-wing media and super over-protective ignorant religious parents on his side. If the government wanted to, they could justify it through a war of ideologies which the "evil" computer-game industry would never be able to stand against in the eyes of most voters.

And secondly, you say laws like this don't work. You're damn right, but that doesn't seem to stop the government. Look at America's War on drugs, or war on terrorism for examples of rampant stupidity fueled by conservative ideology that don't work.

And by the way, the ESRB doesn't exist to protect the gaming industry. That is a joke and a half. :P

Anyway, we need to overturn this law.

Why? I live in America, not Greece. People that are Greek citizens need to do what they feel is best, but this has nothing to do with any other country.

Even if he shared those kind of views, I believe logic would convince him that banning computer games is a lot more harmful to democracy than leaving them.

The one thing I'm wondering is, how does one go about actually banning video games? How would that ever be enforced? All you could do is get stores to stop selling games, but you could buy them in other countries, burn them, trade them etc...

If you look at the trends in the media and society of the last few years, you can see a trend towards more fundamental ultra-conservatism, as well as blaming computer and video games for youth violence, crime, etc. While it is very unlikely that a total ban on video games could happen in the US in the foreseeable future, it could easily happen that games labeled as ultra-violent/evil/satanic by the media or certain ultra-conservative/religious/parental associations could be banned in the US, causing a backlash among game developers who would be afraid to put out controversial material and would merely stick to sequels and games that suck ass. Kind of like Hollywood.

Yes, because of course they couldn't restrict minors from buying your so called "ultra-violent" video games, such as America's Army (Is that what it's called? I forget..).

"Doesn't work", surely. War on Terrorism didn't/doesn't work.. Hmmm. Let me think about that one for just a second. The Taliban has lost its role in the Afghanistan government, the country is no longer run by terrorists, many prime Al Quieda members were killed/captured, and they havn't been active since the War on Terrorism began. What didn't work? Maybe because Bin Laden is still alive? That doesn't matter at all, what danger is a snake if it has no fangs (unless it can strangle you, but that's besides the point)? I hardly see the War on Terrorism as a work of rampant stupidity fueled by conservative idealogy.

Well, um, let's say little Jimmy, age 6, goes out with his mother and ignorantly purchases GTA3 for him, despite the ESRB rating of M. After a few days of playing GTA3, Jimmy has developed a foul mouth and a habit of bringing home strange women. Jimmy's mother sues the creators of GTA3 for allowing such unappropriate content to be released in a game. No way in hell she would win anything in the courts. The ESRB rating is there, and it protects game developers from people like Jimmy's mother. It her own fault she neglected the ESRB rating, and the game developers did nothing wrong.
