England and France were at war for nearly a hundred years. France and Germany were antagonistic for nearly a hundred years between at least 1870 (when Germany invaded France and took the provinces of Alsace and Lorraine) and the end of WW2 in 1945. There are hundreds of examples of conflicts that have been resolved between rival nations. If you're talking about very close nations, there are many examples of nations breaking off peacefully after the Cold War - many breakaway Russian republics, Czechoslovakia peacefully separated (by vote) into the Czech Republic and Slovakia, Germany of course reunited etc etc. It is very likely that India and Pakistan will make their peace in the future, it's just a matter of when and the cost in lives and human suffering. The dispute is, after all, about some empty land in the middle of the friggin Himalayas.
I'm talking about nations that have disputed territory and shell each other (and possibly send hit squads at each others governments) on a semi-regular basis. The breakup of Czechoslovakia is irrelevant in this case, as there wasn't any disputed territory or ethnic groups caught on the other side of the line. As for Alsace-Lorraine, the reason the Germans took it in the Franco-Prussian War is because some dude named Napoleon (or possibly earlier) had taken it from Germany( which didn't exist at the time, per se, but never mind).

The dispute between India/pakistan is over the Kashmir, not empty mountains. I think this could be because both countries wish to use the classic Led Zeppelin song as their national anthem.

As for the breakaway Russina republics, heard any good news from Chechnya and Georgia lately? I'm sorry dude, but peace only comes from the barrel of a gun, or the threat thereof.
Land Mines. There is no excuse for keeping land mines around.
I agree the mines you talk about, the bouncing betties and those ones the russians used in afghanistan have no place in this world. the ones on the DMZ in korea are different though, they are largely anti-vehicle. You also said that tings are getting better between north and south, same as i did, and if things do normalize between the two, then i say the US should get on board and ban the fuckers.
I'm talking about the present and not the past.
What is the present? The Past? As I write this, the present when i think of this sentence and the present when i finish writing it are two different times. Is either one the present? When does the past begin, or the future?

*SMACK* sorry, time to stop getting philosophical.

Is this sarcasm? cuz I could give a summary of the Franco-Prussian War, but to do justice to that i would have to get into the rise of the Hohenzollern family, which would then need to go into decline of the Holy Roman Empire, which goes to Charlemagne......

Shit. So there was this bang type thing, a "Big Bang" if you will, and then a few billion years of shit happened, and then this dude named Gooseman made CS. That's all thats really worthwhile ;-)

Sure, everyone's heard it: Hitler's mom was a jew, his aunt was and so on, but they wheren't. Hitler was part menataly derange, but not part Jewish, even though I can see how satisfying such a thing would seem to part of the world.

OK, lets move AWAY from the lame USA/Rest of World arguments......

This isn't the first time the Greek government have done silly things.

Last year, a bunch of British plane-spotters (people who take down the serial numbers of planes as an excuse to travel all over the world searching out weird planes) were arrested by the Greek authorities and charged with spying, because they took the numbers from Greek military jets (which are not classified anyway - us Brits and the USA sell them most of their military kit anyway).

In court, the Greeks couldn't believe that people actually plane spot for a hobby, and as far as I know, the case is still going to go ahead. The party broke Greek law, which is something they should have been aware of, however trivial what they were doing seemed.

This has happened mainly due to the cultural differences between countries - what may seem perfectly normal to us can be obscene to others. It's the same for this gaming thing, even though its only applying to PUBLIC gaming (people can still game at home on the 'net). Just be aware that not everyone adores the USA and worships the ground it walks on.

Greece is a democracy, and if the people want the law overturned, then it will be - they brought down a military dictatorship to win their freedom ffs - read some history. These people know what freedom is, and don't take it for granted, as opposed to some constitution spouting Americans, whose idea of freedom is to force their beliefs on other people (parallels with Islamic regimes, methinks?)

In short, just try to understand that we're not all the same.

England and France fought over the same disputed territories for a hundred years nearly constantly... (The region of Aquitaine I believe)

How about Quebec and Canada? :P There might've been disputed territory/ethnic groups in Czechoslavakia, I'm not sure but there must've been some.

While it's not clear what is the present and the past, it's clear that colonialism is in the past and US domination is in the present.

No, it's easy to give a summary without too much historical background. But I'm not the one to do it because it would take a few hundred words. Read a history book or look on the net. Basically, Prussia wanted to unite Germany and to do it needed to remove France from meddling. France was worried about the growing domination of Prussia/Germany and was also angry because Prussia had defeated Austria in the 1860s leaving them virtually ally-less in continental Europe. The catalyst was the dispute over the successor to the Spanish throne because Prussia put in a contender. Prussia goaded France into war, they fought, France got its ass kicked (as usual. How come France seems to have such bad luck when it comes to war?) Prussia used the pretense of war against France to unite the German territories and so they sent armies, thus they had about double the army of France. Paris was sieged for three months and they were eventually forced to eat cats, dogs and even rats (hahaha can you imagine those poor Frenchmen having to eat stray animals to live) to survive until they finally surrendered, signed a treaty giving over Alsace and one-third of Lorraine as well as war reparations of 5 billion francs and a forced occupation for the next three years until the amount was finally payed off. By the way, Alsace-Lorraine had belonged to France for well over a century I believe.
xep: I enjoy listening to the "World's History of Atrocities and War Retold", but I think your arguing is pointless and endless.
True, but it's interesting and at least I'm making history class count for something. :P

placed in public places such as hotels, cafeterias, organization halls and inside any other public or PRIVATE

I assume you're talking about WW2? If so yeah, thanks. The aid for rebuilding europe was/is greatly appreciated. Since it was europe that had it's lands bombed an populace killed it was us that needed the aid... So I guess it wasn't so strange that the US gave a hand.
                            http://www.usaid.gov/about/accompli.html
You are rightfully proud of that list. Too bad it's so pathetically small for your gross national product.
We have spent a lot of money on foreign aid. And you say it isn't enough. Take a good look at our budget.
*Cough* How about you take a look and then come back?
Do you see China giving much foreign aid? How about Europe? As much as us?
Geez. Not as much in dollars... but much much more of the total amount we have to give. Official Development Assistance (ODA) for 1999 and 2000. I somewhat doubt this has improved under Bush Jr. It's about having the self discipline to be fair, but I assume this concept would be alien to you...
Do you also expect that people who have hated Americans their entire lives to just suddenly switch their opinions from a few changes we make?
Don't you think it would improve the world quite a bit if the US wasn't so dispised throughout the world? Should we not work towards that goal?
You talk about us supporting other countries. What about China, Russia, etc.?
Ok... are you still serious or?
I'm not saying the U.S. is an angel, but we do a hell of a LOT more than other countries.
Yeah... more than Borneo... or Somalia. But less than the rest of the western world, which you are keen to compare yourself to.
We are just hated for being the richest. If positions were reversed, you think the Terrorists would spend 20+% of the budget on foreign aid? Or even the amount we currently spend?
Too serious differences in wealth breeds unrest, envy and hate. Does that strike you as strange?

Concerning your intellectual blitz of an argument, are all poor people terrorists now? It would probably be a learning experience for you to try the reverse situation, though. For all of us.
Also, there is quite a lot of hate from religion. Now, how are we suppose to stop that? Convert to Islam?
Religion is a medium for hate, not the source.
America does try their best. And that's more than quite a lot of nations can say.
                            No.
A lot of our wars have been looking out for smaller countries. Would you rather us be completely neutral? And how can we be neutral if we give foreign aid? Giving aid to both sides of a war doesn't make much sense...
"Looking out" as in "watching out for own interests" or did you mean another kind of "looking out"?
Please tell me what YOU would do. And be realistic. How can America do things better? We're having problems with our budget enough already.

Percentages can also be easily deceiving. .1% can be the same amount of money as 10% to another nation.
Holy lemming. The whole western world could drop their living standard 25%, how's that for "better"? If you think any country is doing their absolute max concerning 3rd world aid, I would suggest you free your mind a bit and take a look at humans and the ideals and instincts that drive them - selfishness and greed, has a good grip on the stearing wheel. In you and me.

Actually come to think of it that's all wrong. I believe Europe did pay the US back for at least a good portion of its war debts and reconstruction.
