Yes, the news media does tend to do a fairly poor job of reporting on video games. To be honest, this frightens me, because I watch the other news expecting it to be accurate, yet in the back of my mind, there's a little voice saying that they quite likely screw up other news events just as badly.
As far as the whole stadium thing, well, personally I don't go to stadiums now, and I don't plan on doing so, even for CS. It was asked why people would watch a video game when they could just go play it. It's just like any other spectator sport. Sure, we can all grab a ball and shoot some hoops, but not all of us can do a 360 slam dunk over two 6'5" guys. In other words, we watch those who have more skill than we will likely ever have. Nobody is claiming you'd want to spectate normal matches on pub servers... that'd be like sitting and watching gradeschoolers play a game.
Personally, I watched several matches from the CPL this summer, and enjoyed them greatly. However, I really don't know if the broad masses are ready for watching that kind of thing yet. And to be honest, it might scare me by the time they are, simply because it's one step closer to how things were back in the days of the gladiators. Yeah, CS isn't real, but the appeal for blood sports among the masses can be. Just a thought.
Somehow, I don't understand how someone could view football as fast paced, and see CS as not being so. But maybe that's just me. Like it or not, though, esports are definitely growing in popularity and recognition.

The Cyberathlete Professional League was the feature of a recent story on the Pentium 4 Summer Championships done by WFAA TV, a news station in Dallas. In it, Angel Munoz speaks of his desire to build a permanent, dedicated venue for CPL events. Domain Of Games reports that cable television show Next@CNN aired a three-minute segment on the CPL's Pentium 4 Summer Championship Event today at 1PM Eastern. If you want to see the recast, watch CNN tomorrow at 4PM Eastern / 3PM Central.
