CPL In The Dallas Morning News

The Dallas Morning News has written another profile on the CPL and CEO and founder Angel Munoz. The article is titled The Gamer's Guru and focuses on the CPL's humble beginnings and its future prospects.
Basically, he aims to bring together a splintered community -- mostly young males, locked before their computer screens. In broader terms, he wants to take something that is underground and bring it into the mainstream.

It's not what you might expect of a 42-year-old former investment banker and father of two young children. He's puzzled by his obsession.

"But I have a natural affinity with gamers -- I really do," he says. "I like gaming, I like gamers, I like the whole environment. Honestly, I'm very surprised that I have built a business around something I have loved so much."

well lots of people play after school at this game. It's not just a game, it's also a way of forgetting the hard days at school/work. I honestly think gaming is great until the moment where you can't control yourself and it becomes a life...

Angel Munoz is so easy to hate, just like VALVe. I really don't understand you people who point the finger at him. If you don't like the way the CPL is run, don't participate. If you don't participate, who the hell are you to whine?

Uh, yeah. It's easy to show disdain for Valve i don't know... maybe because they have a tremendously shitty record of patch support? The fact that they haven't released a game in 5 years (HL platinum collection SECOND EDITION)? Or that they've alienated just about every fan they had for TF2? So yeah, great comparison there, ace.

There isn't much hate toward him. It's instead more like an overwhelming lack of respect, and it's fairly easy to see why. For example, every so-called "interview" ends up similar to the last. Honestly, look at this shit:

"Angel Munoz is the prophet for a cult that many folks over 30 hardly know exists."

I dare you to find me an interview or story where the writer/interviewer doesn't have a terminal case of ass-suck syndrome. If you can, i'd be surprised. This is part of what gives people a justifiably shaky view of the CPL and Angel. Might be different if every news item about the CPL didn't seem like a blatant PR shot. Especially that god-forsaken AVault; going there is like going to a movie website and expecting even a SLIGHTLY objective view to be presented. It's been clear for a good, long while that grossly un-biased information is NOT going to come from Angel, AVault, or anything involved with him. This is a big part of what leads to a natural distrust.

Then we have the absolutely pathetic mess that we call the "pro" scene, with Angel constantly pointing at it and saying "Hey, look! This bratty group of clan-hoppers and elitists are the future of your hobby! And i'm the one trying to make it so!". Gee, no thank you. Anything Frank "dipshit" Nuccio says or does is just icing on the cake from there, and is further guilt by association.

Why does anyone who's not a CPL participant care? Because this is something that easily affects people outside of that little group and even online gaming as a whole, specifically because of the attitude of said participants.

I REALLY hate people who constantly talk about how much public servers suck. They need to die.

                  Public servers are lame.

True, mouth, but people seem to be critical of VALVe even when they do something right (such as VAC), people just jump up out of their seats and proclaim "PIECE OF CRAP THAT DOESNT WORK OMG VALVE IS G4Y".

How can you hate someone for something they didn't do? VALVe being Half-Life's creators, why should they need to produce anything else? They will most likely keep milking Counter-Strike as long as we, the consumers, keep playing it and giving it media attention. You have to understand that companies don't form to please YOU, they are in it for money for THEMSELVES, which makes perfect sense in my eyes. If VALVe doesn't need to release any new games, why should they? Though I do feel that their whole issue with TF2 is bullshit, I hate TFC with a passion but they shouldn't be talking about a game that will come out who-knows-when.

The future of your hobby depending on what it is. If you're just a casual CS player, then no, your hobby's "future" wont be affected by Angel Munoz whatsoever, except for the fact that its lifespan may be prolonged. The "professional gaming" scene is still pretty new, so yes, the clanhopping will most likely continue until the scene becomes more stable, if it doesn't crash and burn. Although, I can't figure out for the life of me why in the hell you care what clan someone is in if you see "professional CS" as a bad idea in general. Almost seems like me complaining about the quality of yesterday's Operah Winfrey show when I can't stand her in the first place.

Explain to me how this works. How does the CPL affect people outside of that "little group" (that everyone seems to hate, God knows why)? The attitude of the said participants.. about what? Not sure if anyone else has noticed, but they seem to have a wide range of emotions. If you mean the Win-Win-Win attitude.. well no shit they are going to want to win at all costs. That's what it's about. Try playing with some CAL-i guys in a scrim sometime, maybe you'd understand more.

I don't understand why you would want to snipe the man just because he actively promotes the league that drives his livelihood. I'd say if you expect him to be a font of "grossly un-biased information", then you're probably in for a few other surprises in life.

It's the herd mentality, which is compounded by the fact that VAC is the only thing Valve's done right.
How can you hate someone for something they didn't do? VALVe being Half-Life's creators, why should they need to produce anything else? In most cases, yes. The thing with TF2 though is that QWTF was very much a grassroots deal. QWTF had a lot of community support (to the point where select people IN the community were given the source to fix exploits), and just about everyone who cared about the homebrewed mod that took Quake by storm got slapped in the face with bullshit "release" dates and engine switches. Common sense would suggest that when you've got something that owes a LOT to fan support, it's decent to throw your supporters a bone. That hasn't happened in YEARS. Quite really, they might as well have said "HEY! Everyone excited about TF2? AHAHAHA, fuckers. Here's an MP3 of 'tf2 sounds'".

Like i said, there's now a SECOND EDITION of HL platinum. It's impossible to not feel cold toward Valve. Newsflash: people don't like feeling as though they're being sponged off of by a company that's seemingly incapable of doing ANYTHING. Apparently, they thought the fans meant so little that they won't even show a modicum of respect with a recent screenshot or 2. You'd expect a fly-by-night company to act like this, not one like Valve.
Although, I can't figure out for the life of me why in the hell you care what clan someone is in if you see "professional CS" as a bad idea in general. Hey, i'd be perfectly happy to not care if someone would lock the little bastards inside a box with airholes and put it somewhere dark.
Explain to me how this works. How does the CPL affect people outside of that "little group" (that everyone seems to hate, God knows why)? It affects everything outside of the "group" when the peon wanna-bes start mimicking the same bullshit, for one thing. I remember when the majority of people gave a shit about the OTHER people playing WITH them. Now, that "win-win-win, screw decency" attitude has trickled down. No, that is NOT what it's all about, and that's the point. I do not like seeing my hobby go from being fun communities to having the same pseudo-political horseshit that everything ELSE has. Clans used to be fun, now they're just a waste of time if you're not willing to play until your eyes bleed. Throwing money at it, during this point in time at least, only reinforces the problem.
Try playing with some CAL-i guys in a scrim sometime, maybe you'd understand more.
What is this shit? The snide "you don't know jack if you haven't played in CAL or CPL" type of thing. You know what? Fuck you. Go jump in a cesspool before you tell anyone that it's not a good thing to do.

I'd expect him not to be a font for ANYTHING. He spouts off about wanting to make it "mainstream", and i have no doubt that this is what he's trying to do. What i'm NOT sure of is if it's actually a good way to go, and nothing that's come out of the collective CPL piehole has given me a reason to believe it is. It looks, sounds, and feels like business bullshit. I can read a post from one of The Opera team members and know that he DOES care about the community, but I can read Angel saying he cares, look at everything else for reference, and not believe one god damned word. I get huge politician-like vibes off of it, and i'd be surprised if anyone else didn't.

After the same weak interviews, the same weak newspaper stories, i'd expect him to eat a nice stick of "shut up". "I think this is really going to be big!", over and over again. Evidently, it's too much to ask for something CPL related to NOT sound like a PR spin. The CPL and Angel are trying to appeal to an audience that consists of, basically, non-gamer mass-media morons. Angel seems to be GOING for that sort of thing; it seems like these BS articles and interviews are his target. Yes, that bothers me. I find it nearly impossible to NOT be leery of the whole deal.
