Well... If I were running Valve right about now, I would be haul-assing to startup a back-up version to 1.6 with a traditional patch file, but also finding some way of being able to create VALVe's own (WON/Sierra authing system).
Or even y not do both, and have 2 ways of using 1.6 BETA test w/ steam v2.0, and or without Steam v2.0, and with a traditional patch, and or Valve can become the authing entity for that. So it can take off a load of bandwidth usage for them, instead of having +1million gamers trying to dl CS 1.6 via stream, and Im quite sure that about half to 3 quarters of the community would probably just grab the patch if VALVe considers to do that.

those who got steam 2.0 b4 the link disappeared, and get the disconnected error, it is because no client seems to be able to authenticate yet. I put up a dedicated server just to check, and
everyone that tries to connect gets something like this
-----------------------------------------------
---------------
log L 01/16/2003 - 23:46:39:
"Player<13><STEAM_ID_PENDING>&
lt;>" connected, address "24.99.49.183:27005"
Dropped Player from server
Reason: Error verifying STEAM UserID Ticket (35)
-----------------------------------------------
---------------
thats why everyone gets disconnected. And as to the leaked copies: the delay meant that less people got to beta test steam than there would have been had there only been the official beta. The same thing would have happened, Steam still wouldnt' have been able to take the bandwidth.Comment

Let me save you all some time...
If you cant download steam, or are having problems connecting... go play cs 1.5 or diablo or something. You aren't missing anything because none of us can play anyways. Try again the next day, and if it still doesnt work, try the day after that.
If you CAN connect to steam but for whatever reason aren't able to open your own server. I found a little trick that worked for me. Try taking you steam.dll file and copying it to your counter-strike folder that is within your steam directory (steam/SteamCache/counter-strike). Then try to get your sserver up and running. Other people still won't be able to join, but hey, at least you can check out teh additions now.
Hope that helped you... and remember, that doesn;t work in all cases, but I have seen it work in a decent amount. Good luck and have fun!Comment
