I kept trying to connect. There was already people in there when I was going in though.

It was aztec, theres something with the maps.

You can't play with people on airstrip or assault. I can only play on dust, dust2, aztec, inferno, and 747

i mean the big slow 400mb file you dl through steam. it never asked where to dl to. it just gives you the option to launch the game as soon as it finishes dling. i'm guessing it goes into some kind of temporary directory?
no, it goes exactly where i said it did! i know what i'm talking about, browse to that folder and look, you will see a 410MB CS1.6B cache file!

The problem is they never should have released even a beta that acts like it's in the stages of absolute infancy. <----stress the period

I doubt many things are wrong with the actual 1.6 vs they just have a platform that is not complete.

Also, i'll tell you this now, it has nothing to do with bandwidth... you should look at steampowered's forums. Yeah it's slow, but it just doesn't work. People lose jobs over shit like this.

I thought it actually updated the CS files like 1.5 to 1.6. There goes my idea of copying it to LAN clients.

anyhoo, when I run steam, I get:

              Anybody experiencing this also?
Yes, just keep re-trying and it will work eventually, i got that about three times before it finally installed for me. the #1 thing with this beta is be patient when installing, don't instaly quit steam thinging it froze, give it 5 mins to work, if nothing has happened by then you can quit it and restart

also, you can still copy it to LAN clients, just copy your whole steam folder from one computer to all the other, you won't be able to un-install it, you will just have to manually delete the folder.

ok, after updating to 1.6, have you guys tried running cstrike.exe (or a shortcut) from the cstrike directory without going through steam? Will it run 1.6 or the old version?
the only way (for me at least) to run 1.6 was through steam, if i run the cs.exe in the dir it opens up 1.5 i guess i have to tweak it, but i still havent played 1.6 yet! damn servers wont let me in

                          [rant]

Normally, I'm a very polite guy. I try to be insanely helpful, and not flame anyone out of sheer malice -- no matter how inept they act. But, Christ ... you guys take the cake.

I'll sum it up like this ...

                          a) Square peg, round hole. Quit trying to make it work (and complaining when it doesn't); you're only making yourselves look stupid. It's not SUPPOSED to work. The master servers won't auth you for online play, even if you do manage to get the footprint loaded and a local game launched.

                          b) Valve doesn't owe any of us a damn thing. Quit swearing at Valve. We all know you're gonna continue to play Counter-Strike religiously anyway. The same thing happens several times a year; the more popular it gets, the more pseudo-aggressive twelve-year-olds rant and rave about things they know nothing about. "Yeah developers, shame on you, we know all about how titles get produced and published, because we r0x0rz!"

                          c) Quit spouting outright false rumour about Steam. It's a content delivery system -- that's all. No one is charging anyone to play a copy of Half-Life/Counter-Strike they already own (and that includes Steam itself, once C-S gets to the point where it's only distributed via Steam). The only thing you'll be paying for is games you purchase through Steam. This crap has been around ever since the very first Steam beta.

                          d) Steam will be MUCH FASTER (and more 56k-friendly) once it comes out of beta. The Steam betas intentionally corrupt the cache in order to stress-test the servers, requiring a bit more download time than usual. (At least, this is how it worked with Steam v1 ... I've heard similar reports that this behaviour persists with the new beta.)

                          e) Alphanumeric sub-headings are stupid. Do as I say, not as I do.

                          [/rant]

yeah stupid dumB! i double click on Counter-Striek in the games menu... if i load it once it just stays on "preparing to play counter-strike.." .. but if i load it and close it right after, and i load it again.. and it says "sorry we are too gay. please try again later".. does waiting really solve the problem? because i've been sitting here a while

All the LAN clients still have to connect to steam, right? My idea was if I could run CS sans steam, I could make a private game of 1.6 without waiting for every client to connect to steam. Looks like it's not probable. I'll just have to try a few experiments IF I manage to d/l 1.6

I cant even get to the login screen, I keep getting a pop up error after it attempts to connect to the steam server saying that it is either down or to check my internet connection. Do I keep trying so that I can get to the account screen again or is it basically a waste of my time?
