Okay, about three people are making sense in here. Not that I should expect anything else.
1.6 IS going to be "released" the traditional way. This isn't a release -- it's a beta. And, like the 1.4 beta, it's really more about beta testing Steam than it is Counter-Strike. Testing a pre-release 1.6 is just an added bonus.
I can understand why Valve would underestimate their load; they seemed to do just fine when Steam was first released to the public. The possible difference here is the fact that the userbase has probably quadrupled since then, not to mention the fact that they had a fair few people (like me) participating in their "semi-closed" beta beforehand who weren't swamping the servers when it was unleashed to the public with the ******. (We got to peek at DoD 2.0 a couple of weeks early, as well ... I felt speshul.)Comment

I played with 1.6 today, it's friggin' awesome. Haven't played online yet, only LAN game. One thing I wanna point out is, you gotta be patient. Some things may take a while to happen w/ Steam (3-5 min), at least they are tonight. But yeah, it's worth the wait!

ok heres MY deal
I can LOAD steam fine.
I can LOAD CS fine.
I can CREATE my own server fine.
BUT NO ONE --- I REPEAT NOONE -- can join anyone else's server.
P.S -- even if you HAVE THE installed for STEAM -- they will NOT accept you trying to create a new registration. --
